Digital camera reviews of Olympus DS-40 Digital Voice RecorderDigital camera Review: Good Quality Tool... Summary: 5 Stars
this is a great quality product. I originally looked at purchasing lesser DVR's and decided to go with this unit. The voice and sound quality is excellent. The software which is included with the recorder works well and is actually useful. The ability to "step" sound quality levels is a great feature as you don't always need perfect clarity saving storage space. The voice activation feature functions well. Worth the expense.
Digital camera Review: Good value for price Summary: 4 Stars
I am a physician and use this for dictation of patient visits. This is a great unit except for one small issue. There is no way to review your dictation in any particular file while you are dictating, and then resume dictating. Once you either push the stop button, or the play button, the file is ended and the next time you push the REC button, it starts a new file. You have to buy the more expensive models (~ $100 more) for this option. Otherwise the voice activation control works great and the sound quality is good. Great price at Amazon, $103. $159 at Best Buy.
Digital camera Review: Great all in one recorder Summary: 4 Stars
This recorder is great for those who need to take voice notes and also want to record music at a decent quality. My only complaint is that there are only three microphone sensitivity levels, which is the only thing that makes this thing not all that ideal for music.
Digital camera Review: Great and terrible Summary: 3 Stars
I use the DS-40 exclusively for recording one-on-one interviews.
Good points:
- Sound - Creates excellent quality sound files.
- Computer compatibility/software - Flawless transfer of files between recorder and a computer that uses Windows XP Professional.
Bad points:
- Power button - About a week after I began using one of these, the power button fell off.
- External microphone - Several weeks after using one of these, the external microphone stopped recording in stereo. I tested the unit with a microphone from another unit and it worked fine. The problem was the external microphone.
Note: I have two of these units. I bought one from Best Buy, which has performed flawlessly. I bought the other from Amazon. It had both of the problems mentioned above. I sent the unit back to Olympus for warranty repair/replacment. I got the same unit back with an excellent turn-around time (about 1.5 weeks). The power button had been replaced, but the microphone still does not record in stereo. I am now attempting to decide whether or not to waste more time and money returning the unit again, or simply going with the internal (monaural) microphone.
For the money, an average buy.
