Digital camera reviews of Olympus ME-51S Stereo Microphone

Digital camera Review: Great addition to a pocket dication recorder
Summary: 5 Stars

I am very pleased with this microphone. I've used it to record several meetings and even sitting in the back of the room, it is sensitive enough and provides enough stereo directionality that you can hear all the voices clearly and easily take notes from the recording using headphones.

Digital camera Review: Great for recording small conference meetings
Summary: 5 Stars

I connect the ME-51S to an Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder (142015) and put it in the middle of a conference table - having two active recording heads, perpendicular to the plane of the recorder, it records both sides of the table quite well. You can plug it directly into the top of the recorder, or connect it via an extension cable. It also includes a removable clip, but it is not "noise canceling", so don't plan to wear this on your lapel while recording. It works best if the recorder is in Conference mode when you use this mic.

Digital camera Review: Great mic!
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this to use with our WS-300M to record a class. We thought the stereo would result in a better quality recording. In the end, we set the recorder to MONO (HQ) because the speaker moves his head and the sound travels from one channel to the other! Good quality but distracting. Save your money and buy the mono mic. The quality is excellent in either setting.
Buy the way, in case you miss it, this mic does come with a cable to connect it to the recorder.

Digital camera Review: Me-51s music record
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this in an effort to improve sound quality with my DS-2, as I wanted to record some songs (by myself and others). Whereas it is effective, I honestly did not notice too much difference between this and the buit-in recorder. I would need to do more experimentation with angle or recording, distance from mic. etc but I honestly believe, whereas this is a good attachment for my DS-2, the recorder itself is meant only for recording speech.

Digital camera Review: Not for when people talk over each other
Summary: 3 Stars

I got this mic hoping that I would be able to voice record during my field work, but did not really help because people were talking over each other. When kids scream further away, you can not even here person next to you. You definitely need a directional one which my old Olympus' embedded one works fine.
I think this is a good piece if you are recording in a conference room when people talk one by one, but not in a crowded room. It has a high receptivity, so it will get anything around. It also does not work outside when a plane is flying over.
