This used camera from an Amazon partner came broken. It did not say that when I ordered it. The seller did not respond when I contacted them, but Amazon returned my money through the A to Z guarantee program. I use an FX format SLR and film cameras for more formal photography, so the Stylus 1010 was purchased for general family snapshot use. As an upgrade to older model Oylympus S350 and Canon S400 models, the S1010 represents a substantial improvement. The lens quality and focal length range is much more useful, pulling in far subjects with longer telephoto function and covering wider landscape and rooms with wide angle coverage. Flash output is higher, so there is much less light fall off when taking indoor shots. Both shadow and highlight range have improved with far greater detail.
Long delays between shots are gone, continous shooting is 4x faster and transfer of files to a PC is similarly improved. The view finder is bright and viewable in sunlight, controls are handy. The steady shot function is very effective in controlling camera shake in low light. 4GB of storage and long battery life are convenient.
Software features to me are gimicks that have little practical purpose and quickly lose their entertainment, need to fiddle, value. I can turn a camera on its end to change from landscape to portrait and I can pretty much tell when people are smiling. "Gimick" of course does not include improved exposure and contrast control with useful metering options that are included in the product.
The camera will not deliver high end SLR results, as it does not have the optical range or image sensor coverage and density to do so. But as a point and shoot casual camera that can handle a lot of use, it's a very good product.

When a buy an item for over 250$, you expect a reliable delivery. Don't you. But instead amazon chose to ship it via USPS, who just keep it outside your side and here in Redmond where at a lot of places the letter boxes are outside the houses, anyone can just pick it up.
An item worth 250$ ought to be delivered by a courier like UPS or Fedex.
If amazon has to ship anything via free shipping it should just mention that we have no responsibility that it would be be delivered to you.
If am not buying anything from Amazon from now onwards..

This camera is positively awesome. Many pro-style features in a camera priced at an intermediate level. 7x optical zoom (vs, typical 3 or 5 from most cameras), two types of image stabilization, and, you can preview, on-screen, 4 different exposure settings for the same shot, and pick the one you like before shooting. There's in-camera editing, including cropping, retouching and other functions. There are more preset exposure settings than most people typically use. Create 3-panel wide panoramic shots in-camera, "frame" and add text or make a calendar out of each photo...and you can add 4 seconds of sound to each shot.
Even with all these features...you can still set it on Auto...and your Mom, who's VCR is STILL flashing 12:00, can use it and take great shots.
Giant lcd screen makes previews easy to see, even in less than stellar situations. I love this camera...and after seeing the results and the rich feature set...three of my friends have already purchased their own. I don't make many purchases without doing my homework...and this one stood out. Check the ratings on www.alatest.com where 24 pros and almost 700 typical end-users scored it a 90%, excellent, rating. Highly recommended.
