Digital camera reviews of Olympus Stylus 1030SW 10.1MP Digital Camera with 3.6x Optical Wide Angle Zoom (Black)Digital camera Review: Berry good product Summary: 5 Stars
this is the best camera that i had
This camera offers strong features for a "take it anywhere" camera - water PROOF (to 30 feet) drop proof (to 6 feet) and dust proof. After a month of dragging it everywhere, I think the claims are real. I've gotten it soaked, dropped it, and been in wind-blown dirt without any damage or crud appearing on my shots.
The camera also offers numerous metering modes for shooting. The auto exposure is current with today's best camera that i had. Once you learn the menu system, you can get a good shot almost anywhere, and the default setting works well almost anywhere.
1. There is NO finder window, you MUST use the view screen to frame your shot. It's awkward for those of us accustomed to a view finder. But I've learned...
2. The menus are not complex, but there are a lot of options. There are settings that work for "instant" shots. But for more challenging situations there are great options - especially useful is the "portrait flash" options that let you highlight a face while not losing the background. It actually works as advertised.
3. The lens is limited in aperture. This type of camera does not let you stop down to f/11 for that "perfect" depth of field shot. You are shooting around f/5 and changing the exposure time as you select different settings. What it sees is what you get.
4. It's small. I have several great shots -- that feature my finger over the left 1/3 of the lens.
5. it has the usual metering delay of P&S - so you can't take a TRULY instant shot - but there IS a feature called SHOOT&SELECT - which takes about 8 shots in "motor drive" mode - you then pick one or more that you want to keep. (you must do it NOW - before going on to the next shot, and it does take a moment for them to save.) But for action shots of kids, its fun and works well.
Digital camera Review: Beware of leak problems Summary: 2 Stars
Bought this camera to take pictures while snorkeling. Tested it in a bathtub for leakage before packing for vacation, and all was well with no leaks. But after only two pictures in the water while snorkeling the camera stopped working. Maybe I should've tested it in salt water! The camera would not turn on. All I got were the dreaded chimes of death. I called Olympus service and they sent me a link to request a service repair. You have to send in a copy of your sales receipt, the warranty card, and a brief description of the problem. Sent it by priority mail (cost about $5) on the Friday after returning from vacation. Olympus made the warranty repair and returned it to me the following Friday! That was quick. They even got rid of some scratches on the camera's front black face. All works fine now, although I'm not sure that I will try it in water again! The attached repair packing slip just said "liquid damaged". So the bad news is that the camera is not necessarily water-proof, but the good news (at least for me) was the super fast warranty repair. And I agree with everyone who say that the photo quality from this camera is subpar.
Digital camera Review: Camera Leaks Summary: 1 Stars
WARNING! I bought this camera to use on a trip to Anguilla & the camera leaked!!
This is not a user error, I was very careful! It happened not once but twice & the second time the camera stopped working.
Another couple on our snorkel trip had the same camera they had also bought for their trip & it too leaked. They were able to recover their photos after drying it out but the screen had water in it & the photos all had a blurry area in the same location on all the photos from water.
It would be a great camera if it worked but I would NOT trust it with your vacation photos. Olympus clearly needs to work out some bugs before this is ready for purchase!
Digital camera Review: Camera is NOT waterproof Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this camera specifically to take pictures snorkeling in Fiji. I had used it in the rain and it was fine. Minute I tried to take a picture underwater (less than 1m down, and it should be good to 10m) it broke. Water leaked into the body, ruining the card and battery. Thankfully it was a new card and I didn't lose any pictures.
I am NOT the only one this happened to. Another woman at the resort I was at had the exact same camera and it broke the exact same way. I, now camera-less and complaining about it, met three other people who had similar problems. Everyone who has one of the 700s or the 850 has no problems. But the 1030 is faulty.
Thankfully, the camera was under warranty and it was repaired and the battery and card were replaced. I still won't trust it underwater however. I'm going to buy it a case.
Digital camera Review: Do not buy! Summary: 1 Stars
My husband and I own two of these cameras. We purchased the first one 2 years ago before going on our honeymoon. During our honeymoon in Hawaii, we were going down a water slide and for some unexplained reason, the USB port opened and water got in. Needless to say the camera stopped working (fortunately the battery and memory card were not destroyed). Finding ourselves without a camera on our honeymoon (what a nightmare!), we went in search of a waterproof camera. By total coincidence, we found the same camera at a pharmacy and purchased it. We did get great honeymoon photos and were happy, although a little bummed that we were out $300. When we got back home, I sent the first camera in to Olympus for repair, and received it back a week or so later. After that, both cameras worked fine- above water. Fast forward to two years later and here we were just few weeks ago in Greece for our anniversary. We took one of the cameras with us (the newer one, purchased in Hawaii), and of course used it underwater. A few days into our vacation, the frame around the lens fell off, the paint completely peeled off, and the camera stopped working. It was a nightmarish flashback of our honeymoon experience. We hadn't exceeded 10 feet underwater, and we always took care of our cameras according to the instructions that came with. Here we were on another vacation stuck without a camera. Olympus had let us down two times too many. We bought a cheap underwater camera for 60 euros and vowed to never again purchase another Olympus underwater camera. This is a great camera when it decides to work, but I would advise anyone against taking the chance of buying it. It will eventually break down. I can't recommend this camera, or Olympus anymore for that matter.
