While I've been happy with this camera for the past 45 days, now that I'm in Hawaii and on vacation, it stopped working almost immediately. There are numerous positive reviews of this camera but it appears there are growing "issues" with an apparent design flaw - I count three reviews already from unhappy owners of this camera. Unfortunately, we've already bulked up on xD cards and other accessories but are now considering spending a likely small fortune to have our unit repaired, after vacation, and buying another underwater camera, most likely a Sony or Canon with an underwater housing, to be shipped to us overnight. Overall, a very expensive experiment with Olympus...and their Service Department was very unhelpful in this situation - send it to us and we'll fix it in 5-7 business days. I bought this camera, and honestly I used to love it. Strong construction and supposely Water proof. While snorkeling I got a "Card-Cover Open" message and the camera was dead. Google for this error message and you will find hundreds of frustrated user with the same dissapointing experience. I bought this camera and used it for several day kayaking trips. NEVER dropped it, NEVER submerged it, ALWAYS was careful. I am a part time photographer. Last week I tried the camera and it would not power up. Changed batteries, etc. DEAD CAMERA. Emailed Olympus. Still waiting to hear from them. The Olympus Stylus 1030SW has been shipping with a known defect by Olympus. In the video recording mode the sound track contains a popping sound. It is generated by any touching of the camera. Olympus is supposedly coming out with a firmware fix in September. The buyer should beware of this problem and perhaps wait to purchase until a fix is incorporated in the cameras.Digital camera Review: Do NOT take this "Waterproof" camera underwater.

Okay, I've been burned. Bought this camera in Nov 2008 and took it snorkeling in early January 2010. Never went more than 4 feet underwater, and now the camera is hosed. OF course, it's out of warranty by one month. It's like they time these things. I'm going to try sending it in for repair, but I will NOT be taking it in the water again. What a joke of a camera.
Olympus of course turned the issue on me, asking if I had done the required yearly maintenance of replacing all of the seals/gaskets on the camera? wtf?! Who does that??? Who even knows you are supposed to do that?
As with an earlier reviewer, the paint has peeled off the front (despite always being kept in a soft case when not in use and never being dropped, etc).
I was always pretty happy with this camera -- picture quality was always good, and it was easy to use.
I'm going to get this replaced and let it live out its life on dry land, but Olympus just lost a customer.
