Digital camera reviews of Olympus TP-7 Telephone pick up Recording Device

Digital camera Review: Amazing and inexpensive device for recording phone calls
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a very clever device that plugs into a voice recorder (I use an Olympus DS-2400 Dictation recorder (142015)), and then is inserted in your ear. The microphone is on the outside of the ear (but there's air spaces to allow the sound from the receiver to reach your ear). It works to record both sides of a conversation from either regular or mobile (cell) phones because both your voice and the voice(s) on the other end of the conversation are transmitted through the earpiece of the phone as the standard way such phones work. If you can have all your phone conversations you want to record via speakerphone, you don't need this accessory - just record using a standard lavalier microphone or the one built into the recorder. But if you want to record non-speakerphone telephone conversations without a specialized device or a degree in Electrical Engineering, then this accessory is for you.

Digital camera Review: Amazingly simple and effective, but I had one difficulty
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a writer who needs a way to record phone conversations with the subjects I interview. The only problem I have is that when I place the earbud inside my ear, it makes it hard for me to hear what the person on the other end is saying, although the recording picks it up fine. Did anyone have this problem? I am able go get around it by taping the microphone end to my ear so that I don't have to wear it inside my ear.

Digital camera Review: Amazingly simple and works great
Summary: 5 Stars

I had my doubts, not realizing how simple this little thing works. I attached it to my Sony ICD-UX71 digital recorder, stuck the earpiece in my ear and then made a phone call. I tested it while on the road in my car using my Palm Treo680 cell phone. It picked up the call from both ends remarkably well. I also got all the sounds from the car, but that may be a function of my Sony recorder, I don't know for sure. Either way, the microphone on this device is sensitive and works very well!

The earpiece felt a little awkward at first, but I soon got used to it and it did not cause discomfort. For those wondering how this ingenious little device works, the other side of the earpiece, the part that goes against the phone when you have it to your ear, is a microphone and picks up the sound from your phone receiver.

when listening to the playback of my recordings, I did NOT notice the caller's voice lower than mine, as another reviewer pointed out. However, you can tell it is a phone call and not a face to face discussion. Altough that could be a function of the phone equipment I was using as well (both from my end and the 2 people I called - both of them were talking to me from an iPhone3G).

I mention the recorder make/model and the cell phone make/models as the recording quality may have a lot to do with these factors.

I wanted this as a solution to use for doing phone interviews for a podcast that I work on. It's a great alternative to Skype and so very convenient!

I'd definitely recommend it.

Digital camera Review: An idiot's guide to using this thing
Summary: 4 Stars

For the technologically challenged, this is how it works: you plug one end of the cable into the "mic"
outlet of your recording device, and put the little mic at the other end in your inner ear. Then
you put your phone headset up to the same ear the mic is in, and the little mic picks up both
sides of the conversation. (I'd used earlier generation products that required plugging wires into the phone
and was temporarily flummoxed -- couldn't figure
out how it worked.) I've just used it once so far in a test, but it's simple and easy even for me.

Digital camera Review: Another Idea - Use Your Cheap Earbuds
Summary: 2 Stars

Okay, full disclsure, I didn't plunk down the Andrew Jackson and buy this thing. After reading the reviews, I realized I didn't have to.

You see, I remembered (probably from a Mr. Wizard episode or something) that small speakers including earphones, can work in reverse as microphones. To listen to my recorder, I already had some cheap stereo earbuds plugged into a $3 radio shack adaptor that converts a mono 1/8" jack output into stereo. I unplugged them from the earphone jack and plugged them into the microphone jack instead. Then I attatched the business end of one earbud to the earpiece of my telephone with a rubber band, let the other one hang near the talk-hole, and presto, I can record telephone conversations with reasonable quality.

Now I'm willing to accept that perhaps this $20 contraption sounds better and it is no doubt more elegant. But my solution was free, and the sound quality seems to be in line with what the reviews here state.

A few cautions - I'm no expert on audio equipment, but when I tried this method with higher-quality earphones (even my ipod ones), it worked worse. For whatever reason, the cheaper the better. Also, you MUST use earphones with those puffy little wind-canceling mittens, otherwise you will record the earphone scratching against the receiver and your own wind.

Next up, I'm going to see if I can get even better sound by using the hands-free thing that came with my mobile phone (another adaptor from radio smack), and finally, see if I can use the jack on the mobile phone to connect the phone directly to my recorder. Man, I am such a dork.
