Digital camera reviews of Olympus WS-300M 256 MB Digital Voice Recorder and Music PlayerDigital camera Review: 5 Star with a mic Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a hypnotherapist and make recordings for my clients. They have to be very good sound quality. I always used cassette's, but who has those anymore, so I needed a digital recorder. I looked at recorders $300.00 and up but too costly and too complicated, unless you're a audio tech.
I have an older model that was OK but NOT so good for making CD's. Sound was not good. When I read the reviews on this model, I wanted to know why the difference and what made this so much better. I called the Olympus help line and asked. They were very helpful and said the sound is better because this model records in Windows format. They also told me that by doing about 6 steps I could make my older model sound better, changing formats and on and on with the computer. Too much trouble for me.
I payed about $80.00 for the model WS-300 and it's GREAT, but you do need a plug in mic with a mono to stereo adapter, or stereo mic. No cords, it plugs right into the usb on my computer and the sound quality is fantastic. I highly recommend it. Great little recorder
Digital camera Review: A Best Buy! Summary: 5 Stars
You can't miss with this great, little digital recorder. I've tried other, less expensive brands and all of them were noisy and more difficult to use. This is without question the best buy.
Digital camera Review: A Good Quality Recorder Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the WS-300M DVR for recording lectures, and it has suited this purpose splendidly. It took me a few practice sessions to learn which of the small buttons to activate and in which order. Perhaps the learning curve can be made shorter by more intuitive methods of recorder operation, but this admittedly subjective wish is certainly not unique to this device. In order to maintain as steady a received signal intensity as possible, I constructed a small stand using a plastic block as base and a door stop holder as recorder holder, and this has worked well in keeping the recorder positioned without movement, always facing the acoustic source. As another reviewer stated, playback on the DVR's speakers sounds tinny, but after transfer of a file to a PC folder, playback (on the PC) is reasonably good. Two suggestions to the manufacturer: 1) the display screen should face the back of the recorder rather than its front (at least a choice could be offered), so that the information displayed can be seen while recording is taking place without blocking the source with one's head; 2) the manual, although somewhat better written than other manuals, is oftentimes unnecessarily verbose -- consequently, it is much too lengthy -- and, in some places, it is downright confusing for us, the common folk, to understand readily; in addition, if it really is necessary to include the same manual in three and four languages, then these should be separately bound so that the non-English (or whatever one's native tongues are not) versions may be easily discarded.
Digital camera Review: A Smooth Little Number Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased the Olympus DVR for the express purpose of capturing random thoughts, as it's much neater and more effective than a piece of paper and pen. I have used it for several audio projects and have been very satisfied with the sound quality, compactness of the unit, and the over-all look and feel of it. The only issues I have had concern the battery drain- if you purchase this item, you will definetly want to purchase rechargable AAA's if you plan on using it with any intensity, and software compatability- I have a heck of a time transferring the files to CD because I have to go through Real Player or WMP, which doesn't always work like I want it to.
Overall, if you are looking for something to capture high quality sound in a compact unit without spending an arm and a leg, I would definetly recommend this product.
Digital camera Review: A great Digital Voice Recorder...But you need to read the instructions! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased an Olympus WS-300M DVR for my wife's Christmas. I didn't know much about it, but the price was right. The negative reviews caused me some concern and typically, as I read these, I reasoned that they just received bad products. But now that I have used my wife's new recorder, it is apparent that some of the reviewers haven't read or didn't understand their manuals because their complaints are covered and there are several adjustments they could have made. Its VCVA (voice activated record) mode is user adjustable to activate instantly at the slightest sound. And, unlike the older mechanical cassette recorders, its lightning fast response doesn't lose any of the leading portion of the audio. In addition, it doesn't record any annoying clicks, either! Frankly, I think this is a great little device and as far as the sound...I never expected its tiny 1" speaker to achieve hi-fidelity, and it will play back true-to-life audio if you use any headset with a 1/8" plug or play it through a home computer. Bottom line...this one is definately a keeper!
