What can I say, it's a shelf. I don't have anything else to compare this to simply because this is the only time I've had need for such a thing. One thing I don't care for is the lip in front. I understand the idea, so you don't position what you set on it too far forward and have it fall off the shelf. However, since they don't put one on the back, you don't have that protection on the back side of the shelf.
All that said, the presence of the lip is silly. After all, do you components move around? Obviously not, so once you set a component down it isn't going any where, so the lip, IMHO, is nothing more than a useless appendix. Why do I mention it? Well, since it's useless, then why should I have to look at this 1/2" strip that sticks up. Had they left off the lip, this shelf would have a VERY clean look, to the point that when sitting on your couch watching your TV, you wouldn't even notice the shelf and it would look as if your component was just sitting on top of your TV.
All it all, it works as advertised and wasn't too difficult to setup for my TV, YMMV.

Perfect mounting system for the center channel speaker. Provides a stable platform at a nice price. This could also be used for a component such as a DVD player or cable box. It is sturdy and unobtrusive. Instructions could have been better (minus one star). Otherwise very satisfied.Digital camera Review: LCDs?
