Digital camera reviews of OmniMount Television Top Shelf (CCH1P)

Digital camera Review: Nice shelf - if you can figure out the instructions!
Summary: 4 Stars

My husband and I bought (2) of these shelves online because Circuit City was charging around $40 each for the same item. We have a Hitachi 57in. DLP TV. We set up the shelves, the instructions were ridiculous, but you can pretty much figure out for yourself how they're suppposed to be put together. After all that, we put our DVD player, VCR, Cable box and xbox on the shelves (DVD and cable box were centered between the 2 shelves). In the middle of the night, we heard a loud bang. Both of them had fallen down. Nothing was damaged, except a tiny ding on the wall that was eaisly fixed. My husband got some industrial strength velcro and put it on the tiny legs that rest on the back of the TV. It's been over a month now and we haven't had any problems since. We probably have a higher weight on them than recommended. The only reason I'd give it 4 stars is because of the instructions that (quoting my husband) "seemed to be written by a 4-year-old".

Digital camera Review: Not for every height
Summary: 1 Stars

Product suggests rear supports will handle any length up to 11+ inches, but excludes *many* lengths in between. For instance, my television requires legs to go 2.75 inches, but the supports either go up to 2inches or 4.5inches and up. That's a pretty big gap!

Digital camera Review: Not for offset between 2" - 4"
Summary: 3 Stars

Nice, sturdy shelf, but if your TV has an offset over 2 inches but less than 4 inches, then none of the supplied legs will fit. I tried all different ways to use the shortest legs (2" offset or less for the 'shallow back' assembly) or the adjustable legs (offset from about 4" - 7" for the 'steep back' assembly) and neither worked. Called the 800 number to inquire about a solution for a TV with a 3" offset and got the "we're sorry, the shelf doesn't fit all TV's" response. There are even extenders for the adjustable legs to use with TV's with an offset up to 11 1/8". Makes you wonder why they didn't go to the trouble to accommodate the 2 - 4 inch offset range. Perhaps I own the only TV with an offset in their missing range . . . Luckily I do not have a heavy item on the shelf, so I was able to use the short legs and create my own 'extenders' for them.

Digital camera Review: OmniMount Television Top Shelf - Perfect for holding Tivo
Summary: 5 Stars

With the shape of most televisions today, there's no where you put your CD player or TIVO without it slipping off. I ordered this shelf and mounted it on top of my large screen television in about 5 minutes. It is silver, like the TV, matched perfectly and holds my machines and remotes. The company I bought from on Amazon shipped it very fast and the price is much less than Best Buy or other local stores. I have also bought a black one for one of my darker cabinet Televisions.

Digital camera Review: Probably best available solution for TV top shelf needs
Summary: 3 Stars

I needed a shelf to place on top of my newly acquired Sony Trinitron (Model KV-32FS12), which has a fairly narrow top, too narrow to safely hold a DVD player, cable box and external speaker system. The Omnimount seemed to be the best available.

Product came without the hex key needed to put it together. Bad omen, I thought, grabbing my hex key set from tool box. More bad news -- needed a metric hex key (3 mm, for those who are reading closely and taking notes). One trip to the hardware store and we're back on track.

Good news: Shelf itself seems real sturdy. Almost every piece of the installation hardware is made of metal, which seems to bode well for longevity.

Bad news: The most critical items in the installation, the two leg assemblies, are MADE OF PLASTIC! A hex nut and a bolt have to be screwed firmly into each of these assemblies and they're made of plastic! Cross-thread them or overtighten and you will definitely be screwed (no pun intended). Sarcastic kudos to the Omnimount engineers for that decision.

Installation is definitely a trial and error process and is easiest if two people are involved because of the weight of the shelf and the adjusting required to determine exacttly which length legs will be required for a good install. I used Velcro to stick the front of the shelf to the TV top to make it more secure.

This review could have been four stars, but the missing installation tool and the plastic parts cost Omnimount the extra star. Still, this is probably the best solution Amazon offered to solve this particular problem.

P.S. It's been sitting on top of the TV for about 15 months now with no sign of slippage or failure. I was worried about the double-sided cushioned tape under the support legs, but it seems to be holding in place.
