Digital camera reviews of Omron Body Composition Monitor With ScaleDigital camera Review: Nice scale but is the BIA accurate? Summary: 4 Stars
I recently purchased this scale and find that my body fat measurement is high by 8% versus the tape measure and caliper methods. I am more athletic than most and this is probably due to that fact.
The inaccuracy does not concern me as long as it is linear and I can use a correction factor to get the true value. I am in the process of losing fat (from 24% to about 10%) and do not have enough data points to know if this is true.
The scale is very easy to use and I really hope its BIA measurements can be trusted, lots easier than calipers that's for sure.
I rated it 4 stars on the assumption that it is a linear error and thus easily corrected for. I didn't give it 5 stars because the manual should have discussed the methods it uses to arrive at it's findings in more detail (some detail?, any detail?). I would like to know the method behind the skeletal muscle, visceral fat, and metabolic rate analysis.
Plus it tells me that my physical age is 80 years old (I'm 53)and that's just insulting.
Digital camera Review: Not for an athlete Summary: 2 Stars
If you are a fairly serious athlete then keep looking. This scale does not tell your body fat% accurately if you are muscular and exercise alot. In fact, what happens is that you get an error message stating that you are out of range. Well, what's the range. You find the small print in the book on the operating range for the answer. It isn't on the OMRON website or in any of the ads for these moniters. Under 5% body fat and you're out of luck and possibly stuck with an expensive scale. By the way, the scale seems to weigh you +/- about a pound, perhaps more, certainly not accurately enough to install confidence in the device.
The monitor is designed for the vast majority of people wandering around aimlessly wondering if they should have a Big Mac or a Whopper and not for someone who takes fitness seriously. Those who do need to step up to a better brand, perhaps a Tanita Ironman. You'll spend more money but if you want answers then that is the way to go. These have an athlete mode, by the way, and that seems to make a big difference.
Digital camera Review: Not very accurate Summary: 2 Stars
I received this product a few days ago, and while it looks cool, is relatively lightweight, the body fat % is not very accurate. First of all, I'm a person with an athletic body, and I measured my body fat and it stated 20.6%. Dumbfounded, as I've never been over 15% in my life, I had my friend come over who recently was measured 11% by a professional. He measured 20%!!!
So overall, it's nothing more than a fancy looking weight scale. I'd be content with a +/- 2% difference, but a 8-10% variance means the product is not very good.
Digital camera Review: Omron Summary: 4 Stars
It is a cool looking scale. Im not sure about the body fat/muscle composition reading feature. It seems a bit gimmicky and somewhat inaccurate. Though it is good for tracking drastic changes over time. Don't be alarmed when you suddenly have 5% more bodyfat at the end of the day, it's just a weird reading caused by changes in electrolyte/water levels. The scale is accurate, as I weigh the same on it as I do on the calibrated scale at the doctor's office.
Digital camera Review: Omron HBF-516 review Summary: 3 Stars
This scale is nice but it keeps telling me I have the body of a 52 year old. There is no way to adjust for a body builder trying to get acurate info.
