Digital camera reviews of Onkyo TX-SR304S 5.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver)Digital camera Review: Almost Great Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this about six months ago to trick out a home theater. For most of the time it's been a great, but a few weeks ago it picked up a strange quirk: whenever there's a loud noise like a gunshot or an explosion (in the movie I'm watching, I mean), the receiver shuts itself off. Very annoying.
Fortunately I bought it with a protection plan. Depending on how the repair/replacement goes I may revise my rating.
EDIT: So I took it back to the store, and what they said was that by shutting itself down, the receiver was going into a "protection mode," probably caused by feedback from the speakers whenever there was a loud noise. They said it was probably because I had mixed up the polarity of the wires when connecting the speakers, although it was also possible that one of the speakers had a defect.
It turned out to be neither: I've always been careful to keep the polarities straight when I hook up speakers, and the speakers themselves are all fine. I think the actual problem was that I had exposed too much of the speaker wire from the plastic sheathing when cutting them, and at one or more points the positive and negative wires were touching, causing the feedback.
Anyway, I shortened the exposed wires, hooked them back up, and now the receiver works like new.
EDIT2: Argh, now the line out jack going to the subwoofer broke. It's fixable--I'll just run the speaker wires through the subwoofer instead--but annoying.
Summary of Onkyo TX-SR304S 5.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Silver)You'll find very little differentiation between most entry-level home theater receivers: passable performance, negligible processing capabilities and little (if any) versatility. The TX-SR304 5.1-channel home theater receiver doesn't follow that well-trodden path. By giving you the connections to the A/V components on everyone's lips today--HDTVs, digital video recorders, gaming consoles, etc--the TX-SR304 wants to broaden your entertainment possibilities, not limit them to basic DVD and CD playback. Naturally, you'll want the audio quality associated with the Onkyo name. That's why we've included the circuitry and quality parts found in other Onkyo home theater receivers: Optimum Gain Volume Circuitry, 192 kHz/24-bit DACs, a 32-bit DSP chip, and an H.C.P.S. (High Current Power Supply) transformer. Finally, keeping in line with what's really important, the TX-SR304 provides a user-friendly, accessible solution to home entertainment.
