Digital camera reviews of Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Digital camera Review: 7.1 Sound Harmony
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my second HT Receiver & my second Onkyo. Replaces the TX-NR900 I bought about 8 years ago for a lot more $(still works fine, BTW).
I considered first the 805/806 & 706 models, but w/ the glowing reviews and undeniable value I decided on the 606. I'm happy to finally have an HDMI receiver w/ all the newest format decoding. Having 4 HDMI INs, at this price is great, and I believe, a first. Thankfully, the remote is new & improved. I only wish it had an HD radio tuner built-in and a front panel AUX input to play MP3. In my opinion, this is the best deal

great product/great price.

Digital camera Review: A Non-functional Receiver
Summary: 2 Stars

The TX-SR606 is chock full of features. Up-scaling video to 1080i, up-converting output to HDMI. We bought it for the HDMI switching and to eliminate over half of the cables hanging from our Sony LCD, which it did fantastically. If only it would have worked. A Wii hooked up to Component 1 IN did not get transmitted to the TV either by HDMI or by Component OUT. Trying it on Component 2 IN made no difference. Connecting it directly to the TV verified that the Wii and its component feed worked properly. You can select either of the component IN's as the source, and assign them to an audio source and button on the remote, but you do not have an option in any of the menus to set the output path and no path seemed to work at all. In the receiver's favor, the HDMI switching did work perfectly with three HDMI sources connected.

The sound of the 606 proved to be quite bright, almost tinny compared to our 6 year old warm sounding Denon AVR-1803. The Audyssey auto speaker setup, sent the front sound almost equally to all three front speakers instead of concentrating speech on the center speaker which is designed specifically for clear speech. This made for a more muddled speech quality. It also made the surrounds a good bit louder than manual setup using a sound meter, resulting in some speech being drowned out by surround effects. We were not impressed by the sound quality as compared to an older Denon, and even less impressed by a non-working Component IN.

The remote was also somewhat strange in that you had to keep selecting the Receiver button to send commands to the receiver as opposed to the TV, the other selection button. Receiver should be the default selection on a receiver's remote and you should not have to hit two buttons to perform an action on the receiver. This in turn made the receiver not work on a Harmony 880 remote as programmed in by Logitech. Each command would have to be specially programmed as a macro as each required more than one button press.

All of these combined resulted in the low score I have given this receiver. Despite glowing reviews by most other people, there were too many issues with the receiver to warrant more than two stars.

Digital camera Review: A Painless Year
Summary: 1 Stars

The title says it all. The 606 is a GREAT receiver with high-quality audio, easy HDMI switching, and a clean appearance...and it all lasts about a year. I welcome you all to google "Onkyo 606 HDMI Switching Problems." What you find will tell the story. Onkyo, at this point, should have flat out recalled this system due to the imminent failure of the HDMI Daughter board on all units. This product runs at above-average temperatures (as do most Onkyo products) and as a result the Toshiba-Made HDMI board components, namely several capacitors, fail prematurely. Usually it takes about a year for this to happen. The newer models (706 and 806) are coming up on a year since their release and users are starting to report similar issues. The issue is compounded by Onkyo's world renowned terrible customer service. As we speak I am on the phone with customer service, and have been hold for 23 minutes and 54 seconds. Do yourself a favor and exclude Onkyo products from your electronics choices (for now) and take a look at some of the other manufacturers with similar products. I won't name any here because I would rather you take my warning seriously and not as a marketing ploy. Please, please, PLEASE do NOT purchase this model.

Symptoms of HDMI Failure:
"No Signal Detected" warnings upon power-up...
Wait times of 10-20 minutes before audio/image is passed to TV.
Switching between inputs takes more than 3 minutes (or not at all).

Digital camera Review: A frustrating experiance
Summary: 2 Stars

I have a CTR HDTV that supports component not HDMI. I ordered a Onkyo 606 and hooked it up via component cables. The picture form the DVD player was solid; however, the picture from my directv satellite HR 20 box would show black lines at random and flutter. I called Onkyo and they said try different component cables which I did and there was no difference. I then ordered another 606 and it did the same thing. Finally, I wised up and ran a component cable directly from the satellite box to the TV and my problem went away. I am going to try a Denon avr 888 next as it is in my price range ($350) but I don't like that the latest audio codexs are not supported. Hopefully the Denon will not have video problems.

Digital camera Review: A real nice Home Theater Receiver
Summary: 4 Stars

I upgraded from an older Onkyo for a bit more power and the 7.1 Dolby. What a difference! The surround sound is outstanding. More than enough power for my room. Look at the specs. For the price you can't go wrong. Two small complaints. No low level input for a turntable. And the remote is complex. Be sure to give it room to breathe. This receiver draws 5.5 amps at 120 volts. A lot of that power will be will be heat. The life of the receiver will be extended if the heat can dissipate. Bottom line, you will enjoy this receiver!
