Digital camera reviews of Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)

Digital camera Review: Easy, Easy, Easy!
Summary: 5 Stars

Easy to set-up, Easy to use, and great sound. I used this to replace a AVR2801 which was way too complex and was never set up properly (and I have an engineering degree; woe be to the technical neophyte). Love the HDMI switching capability, and the automated set up of the surround sound is awesome. My first DVD into the player was "Crouching Tiger" and the chase seen over the rooftops with the drums is incredible. This all took about 30 minutes from start to first view. I would buy this product again and recommend to my friends.

Digital camera Review: Enjoy easier control
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my Onkyo 606 since July and am truly impressed with it. Sound is fantastic, set-up very easy. I am using HDMI inputs for 1) a Panasonic BD35 Blu-Ray player, 2) an Oppo 980H upconverting DVD player, and 3) Direct TV HDDVR. The output to the TV (Samsung 1080P DLP 56" A650) is via HDMI. Together these all combine to give me a very satisfactory home theater experience and there isn't one component that I would hesitate to recommend.

Tying all these components together is a breeze with a Harmony 670 remote control. I received mine as a free promo offer when I bought my TV from Vanns Electronics. I doubt that I would have purchased it BUT I now find it to be one of the best enhancements available for hassel free home theater. Programming the remote is easily done online with a UBS cable and, once programmed allows for true one button control. If I want to watch TV I simply press "Watch TV". Doing so turns on the TV, AVR and Direct TV HDDVR, sets the input on the Onkyo to the proper input and output. If I want to watch a Blu-Ray disc, I push "Watch DVD
2" and, once again, all the necessary compents are turned on and the correct connect inputs and outputs selected. As I said, I probably wouldn't have purchased this remote before but now I would replace it ASAP should it ever break.

Digital camera Review: Even Better Than I Expected
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife got me this for Christmas. Our Technics receiver blew a channel and it looked like getting it repaired would be more trouble than it was worth. She paid just over $300 for the Onkyo---which I considered a bargain then and amazing now---especially since the price seems to have gone up.

My expectations for this receiver were that it would cover the same bases as the Technics at about the same price we paid for the old receiver, with the addition of up to date capabilities (many of which I don't need). What I found after setting it up is that the Onkyo's ability to reproduce high fidelity music is markedly superior to what I'd been used to with the Technics (which I'd thought pretty good). It's easier to set up and use than my old one too; the remote especially is well designed and boasts many more controls than my old one did. I really really like the remote. In a 360 sq ft room the SR606 has more than enough power for music and movies. My setup is 5.1 but I'm confident 7.1 would be no problem.

Cons (all relatively minor): 1)THe Audyssy auto speaker setup is a neat feature but after trying it three times I finally gave up and configured the speakers manually---which, as others have said, is fairly easy. 2) My old receiver was big, this one is bigger; in this era of shrinking electronics, this receiver bucks the trend, but of course people expect much more out of A/V equipment these days. 3) THe SR606 has no phono input, so I put a phono preamp (Pyle Pro, $25) between the turntable and the amp connected to the CD analog component input, and since my CD player is connected optically the receiver figures out on its own which input is which and plays the right one automatically. The main point is that the Onkyo is smart enough to sort out the signals without programming, which impressed me. Another point is that this receiver has multiple means of connecting components; depending upon the component, either HDMI, optical, coaxial, S-Video, or RCA. Look at that---even when I started listing the cons I ended up with pros.

Games, upscaling, 1080p: I have no idea.

All in all, this is a fantastic receiver, and it made for a great musical Christmas.

Digital camera Review: Everything is great but it does get HOT!
Summary: 5 Stars

No reason to repeat all the great things said here and they are true. But I would emphasize that this unit gets very hot and even starts to smell of hot circuit boards! I have it in a cabinet with openings in the back, 1 " clearance, no other heat generators, and the front full size door open at all times it is running...still it hotter than anything I have used except for a ham radio transmitter! I recommend that you plan ahead to either fan cool or leave this on top instead of inside a cabinet.

Digital camera Review: Everything we we needed
Summary: 5 Stars

This machine does it all. Could not get any better. Great sound, Is everything it says it will do. Better than our Sony in the back room. Has more HDMI Hookups, s-videos, optical, and audios inputs that you will ever need. And it automatically upgrades the picture and sound for you. All in all this is a great machine and it is not even the top model. We liked this model as it had an extra optical that the top models did not have. Would tell the world about this product!
