Summary:
For the money, this is a steal. This is the best deal out there. Sounds great, the 7.1 HD sound coming from my PS3 sounds incredible. This is the easiest system to setup, plug in the mic and follow the directions on the screen. Was looking at the Pioneer 1018 and this one, the price and free 2 day shipping sold me on the Onkyo, plus I already had an Onkyo, so it helped.
Digital camera Review: BriantPHX Summary: 1 Stars
This unit performed well at first and then progressively the Av functions didn't work. The reason I purchased it was for the AV functionality and ease of use for my family. None of that exists now. It is a failed unit that I will have to replace after less than two years of use.Onkyo TX-SR606 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Digital camera Review: Built to fail Summary: 1 Stars
I've had an Onkyo receiver in my entertainment center ever since I bought my first Onkyo in 1994. This receiver was my last Onkyo product. My past two receivers have had early deaths due to sub-standard capacitors. This receiver suffered from a faulty HDMI board which so many others have suffered from. At first I was noticing that I could not access the media center PC until the system was on for about 15 minutes. Everything else worked, so I suspected a problem with the PC. Then a few months later I noticed that I couldn't access my PS3 until the system was on for 10 minutes. I was still able to use DirecTV, but couldn't get an HDMI signal from anything else. At this point it takes about 5 minutes to get a signal from DirecTV and 30 minutes before I can access my PS3 or the media center. I have finally had enough and am replacing this with the Pioneer VSX-1120 which should be arriving today from Amazon. I've read reviews on newer Onkyo receivers and they appear to have the same issues with the HDMI board. If you want to route HDMI through your receiver stay away from Onkyo.
Digital camera Review: Buzz/Hum Problem was Dealbreaker Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this receiver because of the impressive feature set and positive reviews. It is an attractive unit, and setup was very easy. The on-screen menus are very intuitive. As other reviews have mentioned, it does run very hot.
I really wanted to keep this unit, but there is definitely a buzz/hum issue when using the HDMI connections. When there is a low signal or no signal going to the surround speakers, there is a very audible tone that constantly feeds through the speakers. Higher volumes can drown it out, but if you are listening in a quiet environment, then hum will definitely distract you.
I have returned the unit for this reason.
Digital camera Review: Buzz/hum at 1080P and LPCM audio through HDMI Summary: 1 Stars
Purchased this on features but was disappointed on performance. No matter what I tried (lifting grounds, star grounding, expensive isolation transformer) I could not get rid of a buzz/hum when using HDMI input with a device outputting 1080P (video) and LPCM audio. It is NOT a user servicable grounding issue. Onkyo never replied to my questions. Check the AVS forum for lots of people experiencing the same issue. I don't know if its just a bad manufacturing run or not. This unit simply can not play under these circustances without the buzz/hum. I tried two different devices feeding it A/V with the same results. Either I got a bad unit or this is a bad design.
