Digital camera Review: Buy an HD-DVD player

Had for a few days and returned it. Picture quality was good but the Toshiba HD-A2 with SD discs is better. Plus you can play HD-DVD with the Toshiba. I have no use for the other formats that the Oppo plays: SACD, DVD-Audio, PAL, and DivX. The price on the Oppo and the Toshiba is the same. In fact, the Toshiba is cheaper considering you get 8 HD-DVDs from Amazon and Toshiba when ordering any Toshiba HD player. You do the math. Oppo is overpriced and overrated. "Plays as well as players costing 2X or 3X," is outdated and misleading. It doesn't play better than the Toshiba, doesn't play HD-DVDs, no free HD-DVDs, and they both cost the same.Digital camera Review: Can't beat what you get for this low price

This is an excellent buy for the money. Until PS3 and blu ray drop in this price range (currently $229), this will be an unbeatable deal for upscaling your existing movies and DVD rentals. The Oppo 981 is a standard dvd player that also happens to play every type of audio format available. No where in the ads or on the box does it state blu-ray or HD-DVD player. So.....point one settled. Know what you are buying. What this unit does is "up-convert" a standard format dvd (480p) to 1080p. What does that mean.....clearest sharpest picture possible from your existing dvd collection. You must have the TV to support it! Near hd-dvd quality for discs you already own or rent.
Difference IS like night and day. To receive this benefit you must use the HDMI output. This unit is not recommended for rear projection tv's. Oppo will tell you to purchase the 980. The 981 uses the Farouda-dci chipset and will cause black blocking in the picture. (the black blocks you see in dark areas of the picture. Sorry....this is the newest technology already out pacing TV's produced just two years ago.
Blu-ray or HD-DVD? Don't do it......wait until the format war is over....I suspect a new format introduced within the next 2 years....wait and see which format takes the cake......kinda like VHS or BETA, SACD or HDCD, Cassette or 8-track.....remember that!? Until then.....you can enjoy up-converting your existing discs, listen to SACD or redbook cd's (standard format)or MP3's.
Stereophile class C recommendation......so, somebody has taken notice!
Recommended for ease of use, fantastic picture and sound quality, great customer service.....and the cheapest extended warranty plans from Oppo I have ever seen! A no brainer purchase.

Just got the OPPO 981 and instantly my standard DVD's took on new life.
I can't tell much difference between HD SAT at 1080i and an OPPOlized DVD upscaled to 1080P.
Easy HDMI set-up with my Onkyo 705 as the switcher going into my Sharp Aquos 52" 92U LCD. No need for component outs.
Also has many sound and picture configuations. The audio is clean and lifelike.
Best DVD Upscaler on the market for the price!

Everything about this DVD player is top of the line. There is nothing that it hasn't been able to play unlike my previous two DVD players that supposedly would play all formats. The 1080p upconversion is a bonus that keeps my existing movie library from being obsolete with the addition of a 1080p TV. Although I wasn't familiar with the brand name of Oppo, after spending many hours reading reviews and checking out the forums, it became evident that Oppo had something going for it. Even the high quality packaging leads you to beleive that what is inside is not your everyday DVD player. First quality from the outside in! I can't say enough on how satisfied I am with this purchase and will recommend Oppo to anyone considering a DVD player purchase.
