Product only outputs sound if one of the digital optical cables is plugged in. When I have both my PS3 & DVR plugged in (even with the DVR off) it wont work until I pull the DVR plug out. Complete waste of time and moneyDigital camera Review: Absolutely great!!

I was very glad I read these reviews before I bought the splitter. I assumed that you wouldn't be able to have both devices that are going into the splitter on at the same time but the reviews confirmed it and the suggestion to make sure the devices aren't transmiting audio signals when turned off was very helpful.
My receiver has 2 optical audio inputs but I have an Xbox, blu-ray DVD and cable box that have digital output. I originally hooked up the DVD and Xbox to the optical inputs but the cable audio suffered terribly. I had to turn up the audio so high on the receiver when I was watching cable that the sound was distorted.
I purchased this splitter and hooked my Xbox and Cable box to the splitter because they are never on at the same time. It worked perfectly. All the sound is great. I would highly recommend this device.
Digital camera Review: Awesome device, save yourself over $100!!

Like most others, I purchased this to work backwards from 'traditional' use. I have an XBox 360 and a PS3 and only one optical input on my surround sound receiver, and I didn't want to spend $100+ for another large component device to achieve the same result. Some important things to note are:
1. I can turn both my PS3 and XBox 360 on at the same time, however I only get sound from the XBox when I do. As a rule though, I only have one on at a time.
2. I strongly recommend purchasing your cables from Parts Express. I purchased 2xOptical Cable with Toslink Connectors 3 ft. with my order to plug into my consoles, and they fit PERFECTLY. The cable I was using previously (swapping back and forth) did not fit so well into the "output" of the splitter.
3. I have noticed absolutely zero sound quality difference between using the splitter and plugging in directly. This was a major concern for me, and I am happy to say that it is not an issue.
4. For those who are not familiar with fiber optics, make sure you remove the small plastic caps from the end of your optical cable(s), and avoid touching the ends.
I would have rated this with 5 stars if my existing cable had plugged into the splitter a little more snugly. But I mostly blame the cheap cable I'm using, not the adapter itself. The price is right though and it's a very solid piece. It's nice and small and can be hidden very easily.
