Digital camera reviews of PEC-PAD Lint Free Wipes 4"x4" 100per/Pkg

Digital camera Review: Don't clean your camera without them!
Summary: 5 Stars

These wipes are truly lint free and are gentle enough to clean your camera, viewfinder, lenses, etc. I found these to be really useful to help clean the shutter mirror on my camera as well as the lens' mount, and visual surfaces. Don't clean your camera...or eyeglasses without them!

Digital camera Review: Great for DSLR sensor cleaning
Summary: 5 Stars

The sensors of my D70s and D40 have accumulated dirt spots. A rocket blaster could blow away only some of them. I also tried dust blower, only to leave water marks on the sensor. Fortunately, the water was on the glass in front of the sensor, not on the sensor itself. (When talking about sensor cleaning, we really mean cleaning the glass in front of the sensor.) After reading the reviews, I ordered these PEC-PAD wipes, a bottle of E2 solution, and a SensorWand. The result is great.

I initially cut open one side of the plastic wrap of the wipes and pulled a wipe at a time out of the package. Since they are tightly packed, the pulling generated lots of friction on the surface of the wipe and thus lots of lint. I then cut a bigger opening and the lint is no longer present. It took a few exercises to learn how to wipe well and how much force should be used. Each wipe is big enough that it can be re-wrapped several times.

A good cleaning should not introduce new spots to the sensor. But if you find lint and do not want to touch the sensor again, a rocket blaster will help remove the lint. There is a spot that I cannot remove after repeated wiping. It might be on the back of the glass and I have to live with it. I put these wipes, the E2 solution, the SensorWand, and the rocket blaster into a Ziploc bag to keep them away from dirt.

I ordered all the items from Micro-Tools, which will do combined shipping and reduce shipping cost. Micro-Tools even included a small bag of candies in the shipment.

Digital camera Review: Great little wipes
Summary: 5 Stars

Back when I had a cheap little camera and no additional equipment, I used whatever I had on hand to clean and wipe. As my photographic equipment has gotten more sophisticated, numerous, and expensive, it is important to me to use the right product to keep everything clean and not inflict damage on my expensive glass surfaces. These little pads are easy to carry around, I use it to clean both ends of my lenses each time I change; to wipe off any marks on my filters, to clean slides and old photos before scanning them (if using them alone isn't enough, I use the Pec-12 archival photographic emulsion cleaner) but often using them alone is sufficient to get finger marks off.

The only thing I would change is the packaging. The virtue of these little pads (besides being non-abrasive) is that they are lint-free. Once the package of 100 is open, how do you protect the remainder from acquiring environmental lint or dust? (I wrap the whole block in aluminum foil, but that's a bit of a hassle). I wish they would sell the set of 100 in 5 individually-wrapped sets of 20. That way, while you are using 1 set, the remainder remains sealed and you can take only one or two little packages when traveling. I've tried opening only a side of the package, but they don't come out smoothly the way single Kleenex would. But, other than that, you want to have these little pads to protect your camera and lens investments.

Digital camera Review: Hard to keep moist
Summary: 2 Stars

The wipers work great. No complaint. However, you only need one or two at a time and the other 98 or 99 will dry out and become useless unless you take some care. I used these at work and unfortunately did not have a zip lock bag handy. By the time I got home that evening the others were just tissues. Before you open the package, have your zip lock bag ready and maybe even put a damp paper towel in the bag with this package to keep the sheet moist.

Digital camera Review: Helpful for cleaning slides
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good product for polishing off smudges on old slides. Usually, just a blast of air or a light brushing with a lens brush to remove dust will do, but when things get a bit more smudgy it's good to have a supply of these on hand. One can rub slides with these quite a bit without scratching as they are very non-abrasive. You can combine with a little 99% rubbing alcohol to good effect.
