Digital camera reviews of PNY Attache 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD8GBATT2-EF (Black/Blue)Digital camera Review: Sorry, can't recommend it. Summary: 1 Stars
Became unusable only 2 days after I started using it ("Write-protected" and "Unable to format messages", that kind of stuff...) Checked the PNY Web site, downloaded their low-level formating utility and received a msg that it only would only work on ICxxxx models (whatever that means; my suspicion is that the drives break down faster than support update the formatter) and refused to format. Attempting to contact PNY support was met with a resounding silence. A cheap enough drive, but I guess you only get what you pay for; if you're looking for a good high-capacity USB drive, you may want to look elsewhere.
Digital camera Review: Stopped Working After A Week Summary: 1 Stars
This product worked great for the first week, then stopped working completely. Their customer service was terrible. I will not buy anything from this manufacturer again.
Digital camera Review: The NEWER version of "Attache" Summary: 5 Stars
Maybe some of the other reviews were of the OLDER version, which might account for some of the problems reported here and on other sites (?). Mine looks just like the picture here on the Amazon listing, and includes "P-FD8GBATT2-FS" printed above the UPC on the packaging. After quite a bit of reading online, and based on a little experience with USB flash drives, here are some reasons I chose this particular one:
-- huge capacity
-- appears to be very fast, though I have not formally tested it.
-- even though I do not plan to use it for "Ready Boost", I wanted a drive that met the speed and quality requirements anyway. My current PC's run on Windows XP (so RB is a non-factor for me), and if/when I get a 'puter that runs on Vista, I'll make sure it has plenty of RAM. (BTW, I might just skip Vista and wait for their next OS.)
-- about a quarter-inch shorter than the older Attache version, and classier looking, in my opinion.
-- green LED light that lights/blinks when drive is busy... the light is under the blue plastic near the end with the USB connector, and it is not too bright or distracting, compared to some other drives. BTW, as PNY and some other flash drive makers warn (in their packaging and on their website), do not remove the drive while it's in use (light is lit or blinking) or the drive could be ruined (MAYBE repairable with their downloadable "low level format" utility). Check out PNY's website for other various info... FAQ, etc.
-- cap snaps on very firmly and would not fall off on its own, so if someone complains about the cap sliding off easily, they're probably reviewing the older version.
-- encased by lightweight plastic, but like with many drives, if you're reasonably careful, it seems like it will be durable enough.
As people are probably more likely to write a review if they've had a problem, I figure this drive deserves a better average review than it has gotten so far. But I just bought it and have barely used it, so only time will tell. Anyway, 8 gigs for such a low price... seems like not a big risk. Regardless of which model of flash drive you use, of course have the data stored in more than one place/drive/disk.
One last thing: I had my search narrowed down to this drive and the similarly sized and priced Sandisk. However, after doing a google search on "U3 smart" I decided that even though it's very good for some people, I just didn't need or want it, even though there is a way to clear it from the Sandisk drive if I wanted all the space simply for storage, etc.
Digital camera Review: The cheaper tool in the more expensive tool. Summary: 1 Stars
As others have stated. this product has many system flaws. Within weeks it became impossible to delete some files and add files. When you try to do either the flash drive goes unresponsive and locks the computers up. I have three computers. they are running XP, Vista, windows 7. this problem happens on all three operating systems. look elsewhere and invest your money in a higher end product. Sometimes the cheaper tool in the more expensive tool. My PNY is going into the junk drawer of useless tools that I just can't seem to part with, but will not use again.
Digital camera Review: Will not work on XP Summary: 1 Stars
This device did not work with Windows XP. It appears as a drive having a removable disk. You are prompted to "please insert a disk." Of course, there is none.
Utterly worthless.
