Digital camera reviews of Palm Tungsten E2 Handheld

Digital camera Review: Accurate & Prompt
Summary: 5 Stars

I replaced my Palm Tungsten E with an E2. I received it in good condition, on-time, and as described. I appreciate the efficient service.

Digital camera Review: Adequate PDA
Summary: 3 Stars

My old m series black and white was adequate for my needs. I updated only because it could only be synchronized via serial cable and I grew tired of the black and white screen. I bought the E2 because I really liked the E1 when it came out. I really only need a PDA and I have to be able to carry it around where I cannot take a cell phone. I have a strong tendency to buy this stuff for what I need it for and then use it until it rots as long as it does what I need.

So the pros: The color screen is bright and easily read, the stylus is metal instead of plastic, the software is stable and works well, the writing function is at the top of its form, it holds a charge well, and the form factor is good to execellent. It is a little large in the hand but the screen is larger as well. The software appears to operate as intended. Let me also say that I have never had a problem with Palms of any kind. I have never had stabiltiy problems with the OS. I have had my m series version for years now and it functions as usual. I also use Bluetooth almost exclusively for synchronization and have never had a problem.

The cons:
1. The E2 is fairly expensive and frankly adds little more than an expense tracking feature over my very old PDA.
2. The stylus has a screw off top which has, of course, screwed off. I later found it in my chair.
3. The expense tracking feature does not integrate with Quicken or Microsoft Money. I found it easier to just keep my receipts and then enter them at the end of the day rather than enter everything into the PDA. If it integrated with Quicken this would have been a godsend.
4. It is obsolete. I knew that when I bought it but it was priced right and had only what I need. This will be my last Palm. I guess I have been a satisfied customer, but with the new technology and my changing personal work environment, I will move on.
5. Finally, these devices have been fairly expensive. Although some needed features are/were available thru third party software vendors, I have frankly never been interested. The basics should come with the machine. There were, for me, some deficiencies such as basic Gantt charts and scheduling.

Digital camera Review: After a year of struggling with it - goodnight E2
Summary: 1 Stars

Lots of features, full functionality, bright screen, cool stylus. On paper (and in pictures) it is a great product. And if you are one of the ones who hasn't had any problems with it, you will probably be happy.

However.... I'm now looking for a non-palm product. I had the TE2 for a year. I had to go through many resets early on but eventually stopped loading a couple of relatively small and otherwise safe programs and the resets got better - but never went away. Periodically the only way I could get docs to go to work again was to uninstall everything. Hard reset. Reinstall everything. I'm not new to some tech issues and really worked hard at fixing this bug. Latest firmware, latest version of docs to go, completely uninstalling and reinstalling everything, and so on and so forth. Bottom line is this - it was extraordinarily unreliable. And that caused real problems for me at times with primarily medical software and uses.

So, after about a year it started making hissing noise, the screen became less and less responsive, and eventually it just stopped working. Nothing. Dead. I'm now scouring the net looking for a reliable one that isn't overpriced or connected to a phone service. So far I've not seen anything worth buying.

One thing for sure, this item is, at best, a major gamble. Other websites, like Nextag, have far fewer favorable reviews of this product, also.

I'd avoid it, obviously.

Digital camera Review: All in all, a step down from previous palms
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this to replace an M500 that eventually broke, and am disapointed. It is less stable, has more sync problems, and is generally less robost as a pim manager. Yes, there are some neat new functions, but they are mostly gloss, and don't augment the basic tasks I want it for, or make up for the fact that the basic tasks are now more difficult.
I wish Palm still made the M500.

Digital camera Review: Almost great, but dated and the quality is declining
Summary: 3 Stars

This was my fourth and fifth Palm. I started with the old Palm Pilot, upgraded to color with the M505, got a Tungsten E (eventually the speaker went), then two E2s. The first E2 the digitizer got off and could not be corrected. But I loved it so much that I got a new one. I loved the new one too until one night it would not turn on (and has not turned on since). It seems the reliability has gone down since they started making them in China.

Positives:
1) Open system (IR port, 3rd party software, memory cards etc.)
2) Audible sound at least as good as an IPOD (see my review of the Ipod Touch I replaced it with)
3) Real one player is more functional on the road than I-tunes
4) Personal productivity software (to do lists, note pads, spreadsheets, databases etc.)
5) Documents to Go syncing with Microsoft Office

Negatives
1) Availability (I did not get a third largely because no one stocked them locally and I was in a hurry)
2) Reliability
3) Dated hardware vs. the new touch screens; also some minor issues like only supports memory cards up to 1 Gigabyte.
4) No vibrating alarm (ahh for the M505 even with its dim screen)
5) Documents to Go screwed up my synchronization

It seems that Palm has given up on its PDAs (they may be on their way out). But even after having two of these die on me, I hope they come back and if they come out with an upgrade, I'll gladly buy it.
