Digital camera reviews of PalmOne Zire 71 HandheldDigital camera Review: Excellent Palm with small complains Summary: 4 Stars
This palm is feature packed! Much faster than older Palm Vx I used to have. Real colorful screen. The camera is cool! It can even play MP3 files. Though playing it without headphone is kinda weak. However, Graffiti 2 is not so good. It makes me relearn some strokes. I see nothing wrong with Graffiti 1. I have Chess Genius that needs "/ T" for takeback, now I cannot use this short cut because it will think you use "/ I" before you can finish a "/ T". Wish Palm will make an option to use Graffiti 1. The 5 way "joystick" is a bit difficult on the thumb while playing games, why can't it be a pad like other Palm models? I liked my old Palm Vx's metal stylus and the protection flap. Wish the Palm Zire 71 has it. How come there is no light in the charger/base when it has power?
Digital camera Review: Excellent color, ok pics, HORRIBLE Battery! Summary: 2 Stars
My Zire 71 was a gift (August 03), and a welcome color upgrade from my Handspring Neo. I enjoyed having the handy ability to take pics on the go (furniture shopping, out with my young kids, etc.). I used the pics mostly as digital "wallet" photos because the digital quality is fair at best, but looks great on the Zire itself. I think I had a lemon from the start, but Palm support wouldn't go for an exchange because I had no receipt (gift). My unit had a strange and random "click" sound when in use that couldn't be explained by the regular system sounds (it happened even when the unit was "silenced"). That wasn't a big deal, but may be part of what was behind my troubles. My Zire would completely crash whenever I used the search function (the magnifier button) and would stop working and had to be hot synced as if brand new. (By the way, another reviewer said it didn't hotsync well with XP. I have XP and never had trouble hotsyncing. Thank goodness because I had a lot of crashes and completely drained batteries to sync after!) I learned to live without the ability to search. A MAJOR flaw was the battery dying, and I attribute this in part to the little joystick. It is easy to move by accident, just the slightest touch turns it on and even with it in a protective case sitting in my purse I would often notice a glow that meant my Zire was on. It also sometimes would come on at night with nothing touching it! (I used it a few times as an alarm clock on my bedside table.) I was almost asleep one night and the light came on suddenly and woke me up - weird! Today was the final straw. I like to pass time waiting on carpool by playing a little Bejeweled on the Zire. Of course, the darn thing was completely dead. Again. I really have come to rely on my PDA alarms to get me to my appointments on time, and I just can't take another day of a dead Zire! I am now about to buy a Tungsten E from Amazon. The price is right, with free shipping! If you must buy a Zire 71, do yourself a favor and buy it from a local store and KEEP your receipt and original packaging! And I wish you better luck with yours. It could be a great little color PDA - if only it were reliable and glitch-free!
Digital camera Review: Excellent quality and features Summary: 5 Stars
The Zire 71 is a very versatile PDA. Using a secure digital card you can greatly expand its capability to play music, store photos, videos, etc. Comes with a nice little case. Feels very solid with a stainless steel back. Just remember the first time you put it in the cradle, it doesn't go all the way down, but it will connect to charge, even though there are no lights to show you it is charging (about the only thing I didn't like about the Z71). It has been great for downloading Excel and Word files as well - when you buy one try to get a bundle deal with Documents to Go Premium thrown in for a discount. Camera takes surprisingly good photos in low light - just remember not to move until you see the picture on the screen or it will blur.
Digital camera Review: Excellent screen and first rate features Summary: 5 Stars
I am extremely pleased with this product. It's everything I hoped it would be. I like the feel of the case. I really like the joystick, it's easy to use and has a great feel to it - better than pushing small nav pads. The colors are vivid and the screen brightness is just great. I also like the power on/off button where it is and the ability to add an SD card which I did right away - adding 256MB card for my audio books, music, pictures and Documents to go. I quickly added a portable keyboard and for the first time I feel like I have a useful portable computer that does not take 2 minutes to boot up! The camera is fun and delights everyone who falls for the hidden lens. I did not expect exceptional pictures for the price and after a while you get to understand the limits of the camera and it takes good, easily portable grandchildren-type pictures - great! Of course it comes with all the usual Palm applications as well as some very useful additions and the Palm software inventory is huge!It does not come with earpieces which I am very pleased about. I hate those earbud things, they never stay in my ears, so the freedom to buy whatever suits me is my preference. At a dinner meeting with business people it's a real icebreaker. A Palm representative told me it was a toy but a toy it is not! My Palm III which I am sending back for a rebate has been left in the dust. I bought my wife a Sony Clie SJ33 a few weeks before. I think she wants to swop although I like the cool built in cover that came with the Clie. The Zire has a useless case that comes with it. I threw it away. If Palm introduce Bluetooth on an SD card for this PDA I will be extremely happy! I am also using it to listen to audio books when I exercise on my machine at night - really makes the time fly. My hat goes off to Palm!
Digital camera Review: FRUSTRATING!! Summary: 1 Stars
I loved this when i got it for xmas 2003-- then about a year later, the trouble started.. i had many problems hotsynching with my mac at work, finally worked that out, and then the battery must have been running by being in my purse (the joystick must have been pressed in) and i lost everything on my palm. i had backed up fairly recently and was able to convert alot of my info back on to the unit... then the fun really started! some phantom appeares to be playing with my palm, i will hear click click click and it will be in a loop of toggling beetween functions, or in the calandar it will highlight an event over and over again, and i can not get it to stop. I will turn it off and turn it on, and still the same issue - we did a restart and now it is unusable- the stylus will not respond and it just clicks all over and it is a waste.
I am sad because i really enjoyed the camera function and used it a lot for quick pics to friends and family via email of things that were new in my life.
i will have to find a new pda, and i do not see myself getting another one of these, beware!!!
