Digital camera Review: Why can't telephones last for a while?

I've had this system for about six months now, and at first I was thrilled with it. I liked the ease of setting the satellites up, and the pronunciation of the talking caller ID is a source of high hilarity in our household. Based on previous experience with Panasonic products, I expected this phone to have a reasonable life span; we are not hard on our electronics. However, six months into this Panasonic experience and one of the satellites is dead already for no apparent reason. Even worse, the mother ship is now making short-circuit sounds (ZZZZZZZTT!) just before the phones ring. In my experience, that sound has never signaled longevity. It also has begun crackling when any of the satellites is in use, and I'm already looking for my next phone. My parents' household made it through my entire child- and young-adulthood on a single telephone. Clunky as it was, I wonder if I could still find one of those on eBay? Shopping for telephones every six months is NOT my idea of a good time.
