Digital camera Review: Photo quality excellent, but too difficult to keep the photographs in order
Summary: 1 Stars

We bought this digital frame as a gift for a family member because the online reviews indicated that it would have very good photo quality, and I am very happy regarding the quality of the 800 x 600 display.

However, when I first tried to copy some photos onto the frame from my Macintosh OS X machine via the USB cable, the photos ended up being in a totally scrambled order on the frame, which I found extremely annoying. I tried re-copying them, but it scrambled them every time. As far as I can tell, the photographs appear on the digital frame in the exact order in which they were copied onto the frame, and somehow when one copies by dragging the icons in the Finder, the order gets scrambled.

So I ended up using this csh script in the Terminal window to copy photo files over, one by one:

foreach fl ( `ls` )
set fl2=2007_$fl
cp $fl /Volumes/PANDIGITAL/$fl2
echo Copied $fl to $fl2
end

Note that here I am renaming these photographs by adding the "2007_" prefix to avoid naming conflicts and to indicate that these are from 2007.

Using this C-shell script, the photos ended up in the frame in order by file name (which is fairly O.K., as the majority of my photographs are named using names with increasing digits: IMG_0001.jpg, IMG_0002.jpg, etc.). Still those that had non-sequential names ended up on the frame out of temporal order.

According to the manual, if your photographs are on a camera card and you then have the frame itself copy the photographs from the camera card to the internal memory, photographs will automatically get optimally resized [I did not try this myself]. However, when copying from my desktop to the frame via the USB cable, the frame commands were disabled, and so this option of 'optimal resizing' while copying was not available. Thus, I had to resize the photographs myself first using Photoshop on my desktop Macintosh before copying them, in order one by one, onto the digital frame.

So while I was very happy with the display quality, I would not purchase this frame for myself as it is too much of a hassle to try to get the photographs on to its internal memory in order in an optimal size, and there seems to be no facility for re-ordering the photographs once they are on the digital frame.

Digital camera Review: Pretty good product
Summary: 4 Stars

I am pleased with the product. However, the instructions on set up and programming are not very clearly written. It is not as intuitave as I had hoped since the instructions are less than thorough.
Its a good buy and I got it programmed as I wanted through several trial and error sessions.

Pandigital 8.0-Inch LCD Digital Photo Frame with PanTouch

On the cutting edge of in-home "entertainment" technology, these digital frames are really taking off ... it seems you can't turn around without seeing them! They promise to remove or reduce all sorts of knick-knack frames currently around the house, and with the prices dropping and features increasing, is definitely something to consider!

As soon as we opened it up, I turned it on and was floored by the quality of the picture - It's very bright, sharp, and big enough to be seen from a good distance away (I was looking at an 8" model).

I loaded a bunch of my own pictures in using the USB port on the side (it has 512MB of memory built-in, or you can run right off the flash), and it picks up the drive and any subfolders instantly.

The menus and screens were really intuitive, particularly with the 'touch screen' capabilities. I put that in quotes intentionally; thought it's touted as touch-screen, in reality there are some touch-sensitive areas in one corner and the sides that are used for navigating the menus. Still, this made an already pretty easy process even more intuitive. Just don't expect to be able to drag and drop or finger-flick groups of pics.

The units can also be used with bluetooth or wifi dongles, though I didn't get the chance to try that out.

Once we got our own pictures in place, it was time to unveil it on the world! Having just moved into a new office at work, this was a good time to show it off. Pretty much everyone that saw it (including the wife) was very impressed with the display, the transitions, and the brightness of it.

The only things that gave us any problems were 1) your typical LCD screen issue; if you're at too much of an angle, you can't really see the pictures. The angle you lose quality at was pretty obtuse however, so this is not really a big deal depending on where you place it. 2) Direct light on the frame reflects back making it tough to see the pictures - can't knock it too much for that, as you have the same problem with a standard picture in a glass frame. And 3) the main gripe we had with it was that you have to plug it in. It would be very nice to load it up with some batteries so that you could hang it on a wall or something, but that is not an option in this model.

Overall just a great product, and one we're more than happy to recommend! Picture quality and ease-of-use are exceptional for this product level, and if you're thinking of getting one I haven't seen better.

Note that you can't buy this direct - but if you click on the picture above you will go right to the Amazon site for purchase. It can also be found at Walmart, Target, and some other big box stores: just make sure and look for brand names; not all picture frames are created equal!

Digital camera Review: Very Satisfying Purchase
Summary: 5 Stars

I do not write reviews often, but I do appreciate an honest evaluation of a product without wishes and complaints regarding issues beyond what the product was intended. The Pandigital photo frame is an excellent product with good quality and my experience with the 8" model has been exceptional. The instructions were good and the frame has given me such enjoyment that I am considering a second purchase for my office. The 4:3 aspect ratio was the perfect sizing and I had no issues regarding picture quality. The 800x600 resolution is another excellent recommendation I received from the Consumer Report to make a quality choice of a picture frame. If you are looking for a digital photo frame to provide clear slideshow viewing with a few unique features to make your viewing more enjoyable at a reasonable price, I would highly recommend this product.

Digital camera Review: Very nice frame
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a very nice digital photo frame. You just have to get used to knowing where to touch to get to the different menu items. But It does everything you'd want out of a photo frame for a decent price. Downloads from chips are easy and the picture is good.
