Digital camera reviews of Pantone huey MEU101Digital camera Review: Awful for my Powerbook, great for my iMac Summary: 3 Stars
I own an Apple Powerbook 12" and an iMac 24". I started the calibration on my iMac screen. At the end of the calibration process, you can switch between the "uncalibrated" and "calibrated" profiles. I was impressed to see that the iMac before calibration sported a brown tint I had never noticed. I was really happy with the process, particularly since I even quite liked the iMac screen before, now it's even better.
I was therefore excited to try it on my Powerbook which isn't exactly the most color accurate laptop in the world. I launched the calibration process... and the result is an utter disaster. The screen has this very strong green tint that makes the laptop almost unusable for anything other than text. I tried the calibration a second and third time, same result.
So I'm giving this product a 3/5: 2/2 for the results on the iMac, 1/1 for the installation and system integration, and 0/2 for the results on my laptop. I have contacted Pantone, we'll see if they reply.
Update: Pantone never replied after multiple attempts (email + forums).
Digital camera Review: Basic Colorimeter Summary: 4 Stars
Huey is a basic colorimeter, opt for the Pro upgrade for software and multiple monitor support.
Digital camera Review: Be careful Summary: 2 Stars
I bought the Huey on recommendation from a friend and a couple of favorable mentions in articles in photography magazines. It has not worked out. After calibration and recalibration there is a greenish tint to the grays on my monitor. I have tried everything I could think of to get rid of it. The adjustments via Huey's own setup are minimal and very large. No fine tuning is possible. Calibration with my monitor's own software and the adjustments via my graphics card setup prove to be infinitely more accurate. I wrote to Pantone about the problem and 2 weeks later I still have not received an answer. Save your packing materials, just in case you have a similar experience and want to return it.
Digital camera Review: Better Than Expected Summary: 5 Stars
Does exactly what it's supposed to do. There was only a modest change to my screen color, but a significant difference in my prints which are now WYSWYG. Very pleased. Should have purchased a long time ago. I could have paid for it with the paper I wasted!
Highly recommend.
Digital camera Review: Both extremes - Windows beware! Summary: 4 Stars
Short and sweet: works great, and as-advertised on my Mac from Tiger through Snow Leopard.
I just updated my PC to Windows 7 and Huey fails to apply any adjustments at all. Completely incompatible with my graphics card (older ATI Radeon) although it worked fine with Vista. I just finished installing the "Windows 7 Compatible" HUEY drivers... didn't change a thing. Maybe you'll have better luck with later graphics cards, but be warned... Microsoft and Pantone are at it again.
UPDATE: Bumping my review back up to 4 stars as the problem I was having does not appear to by Pantone's fault. Turns out a lot of graphics-related stuff stopped working with Windows 7. When I disabled the 5-year old Radeon and went back to the Intel on-board graphics, everything, including the Huey, worked as before. Microsoft and ATI apparently don't believe you should keep hardware longer than 5 years.
