Digital camera reviews of Pentax DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 ED AL IF Lens for Pentax and Samsung Digital SLR CamerasDigital camera Review: Terrific Starter Lens - Very Versatile, nice results, great price Summary: 5 Stars
Just picked up a Pentax K20D but since entirely new to the Pentax line, I have ZeRo glass to go with it. Since one of the attractive features of Pentax is their dedication to backward compatibility, I wanted a quality lens I'd be willing to keep for a long time but also some major "bang for my buck" in terms of versatility. This was exactly the ticket.
Having used SLR's for over 20 years [starting with the old Maxxum line} I'm used to a solid feel and don't like much of the lightweight plastic junk. This lens has a solid feel without the weight. Comes with a lens hood and cap. Very intuitive design. Works flawlessly with the Pentax K20D...acceptable speed, crisp clean photos. Since the 18-250mm is effectively 27-370mm due to digital, this is the perfect lens to leave on the camera for those impromptu shots.
In comparision, I also purchased the Tamron 90mm with 1:1 Macro - the lens takes some lovely photos but without a doubt, I like this lens better. Quieter, faster focus, more intuitive design, greater substance without the weight. If I were to only select one lens this would be it...since I only have two right now the Tamron is 2nd choice due to it being a nice portrait and 1:1 macro for a competitive price. The Tamron takes some stunning macro shots and makes a nice portrait lens...combined with this Pentax for all around use I'm very pleased with my starter package in both performance and price.
Digital camera Review: Terrific lens for the money Summary: 5 Stars
It seems that one has to find out which are the outstanding Pentax lenses by reading a lot, and by trial and error. Price is no guide, as with this lens which sells for about half the price of the equivalent Nikon lens. It is an outstanding lens, and even at 250mm (that's 375mm in 24x36 lingo!), with Pentax's superb anti-shake mechanism, it is very useful.
An extraordinarily impressive and useful lens. As always, the drawback of these zooms is their lack of speed. f/6.3 is the maximum aperture at 250mm, but if it were any faster, the lens would be enormous. I use two "prime" lenses for speed -- 50mm f/1.4 (one of the GREAT buys out there) and my trusty old 85mm f/1.8. Those two, plus a 16-45mm Pentax zoom, and this zoom, cover just about everything. I just wish Pentax would stop improving the camera body about every twenty minutes.
Digital camera Review: The best option! Summary: 5 Stars
The best option for people like me, who wants to take good pictures but are a little lazy to carry a big bag of accessories every time you go out.
Good photos in all range, good build and love the "lock" key... perfect!
BTW, Pentax rules!
Digital camera Review: The one lens for my DSLR Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this lens with a Pentax k20d and I have to say that although not perfect, the very minor problems there are don't bother me in the least. Some very slight purple edges show up, but only if the lens is fully zoomed in or fully zoomed out. And I only see them if I digitally zoom in so far that I can't make out what the picture is anymore. The autofocus seems a tad slow, but not enough to bother me.
But being able to get the wide shot and a second later zoom in great. For how versatile this lens is, how good the images it takes are, and its cost you just can't go wrong with this lens.
Digital camera Review: This + In-Body SR = Epic Win Summary: 5 Stars
I've recently bought this lens with a Pentax k20d body. There are many people who would say that the sharpness is not good, or you just can't have it all in one.
Mount this on a K20D and you'll have a 18-250 IS lens with embedded MTF chart for Program AE. Then set your Program AE line by custom functions for MTF priority. You'll get VERY nice images.
This lens is invaluable especially when travelling or having a day off with friends and going around. You'll not struggle with changing the lens to get a good shot and you'll not get any dust on your sensor. I believe this is a very important thing for roaming amateur photographers like me. Of course there are many exceptional lenses for studio shots or specialized shots. But as for general walk around lens, as far as you use it with a in-body SR Pentax, this lens cannot be beaten.
