Digital camera Review: DSMobile600 Scanner - A Great Tool for the Office & Home Summary: 5 Stars
I wanted to have a way to quickly get a document into a readable and flexible format on my laptop so I could email it immediately. This scanner does the trick very nicely. Install was a snap! It's portable, small, and easy to use. No power cord to mess with. No muss, no fuss. And I get clean pdf files which are easy to handle and manage. Oh, and the colors are also clear and realistic. For the price you cannot beat the Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner.

Nice compact scanner that works off usb power source. Software interface is decent and most important to me the scanner gave me no problems with my new laptop with Windows Vista operating system. My primary use is for scanning paper into Nuance's Paperport 11 Professional which I have installed on my computer. The only issue I have with the scanner is that the default back ground color is black for all areas which do not see a paper image. A small receipt for example might give a 8 x 11.5 image which is totally black except for the actual receipt scanned. This is some what annoying in that if you want to print the image you have to crop it to original size to eliminate all of the black background. Paperport has an auto crop setting which will eliminate the background, but the scanner software it self does not.
Digital camera Review: DSmobile 600 works great Summary: 4 Stars
I've had my DSmobile 600 scanner for a few weeks now and am very satisfied. It's not the fastest or best but fills my need. The quality of output is better than I expected. I would recommend this unit to anyone who uses a laptop and rarely sits at a desk near a scanner. If my all-in-one printer/scanner allowed wireless scanning I would not need the DSmobile 600. The upside is that now I have a unit that can travel with me...light in weight, but does not feel flimsy at all.
Digital camera Review: DSmobile in the home Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this product in hopes that it was easy enough for my husband (who hates 'new fangled ideas' and 'electronics' as well as 'anything different') to use with out frustration. This has fit the bill. I can now find my husband scanning and saving without even being asked. (We have had an flatbed HP Scanner but that was 'too hard to use' per the husband for what we are doing now.)
Our goal was to ease the issues of 'too much stored paperwork' of all sorts as well as trying to find something which was misfiled. And to keep from having to do the end of year of sorting an tossing out last years phone, electric, etc. type bills yet still have the information.
We have scanned all types of records into PDF files (including manuals of how to operate, program manuals, warranty information, old tax files, legal files, etc.) and now they can be backed up on an external drive and or burned to disc and then safely stored (in much less space) in case there is a negative situation in the house (fire, flood, mice)we would still have the information. Paperwork is a clutter, and stores spiders and bugs when moved to the garage or attic which is also fodder for fire and just that much more to deal with when moving or for our heirs.
Any tax related, banking, house record receipts, etc are getting scanned and attached into Quicken. As long as we are both on the same page in catagorizing, this is working well.
There are limitations for the DSMobile 600 but for the price/ease it does exactly what we need about 95% of the time. Limitations include, if the receipt is folded it must be flattened before scanning as the fold will catch and distort the scan. Some times it is hard to get the scan straight, but since this is mostly receipts or thin paper items which do this, it does not matter. The information is readable and can be reprinted should we ever need. If I need a super high resolution (pictures or items to be published) then I do use the flatbed scanner. The flatbed and portable compliment each other well.
I would recommend this items for someone who wants something easy, with out much space, and wants to go more to the paperless (less clutter) side of life. I can see this item as a great advantage and wish I had it when I traveled for work to keep up with the receipts and expense reports 20+ years ago!
