Digital camera reviews of Pentax DSmobile 600 Scanner

Digital camera Review: Does not work with Linux.
Summary: 2 Stars

The product description indicates that this scanner works with Linux. It doesn't at all and I can't find evidence that anyone is working on making it work. Don't buy it if you run Linux (any Linux). It even had some problems working in Windows XP.

Digital camera Review: Does the job as advertised.
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this product to scan receipts for expense reports while traveling. Installation and calibration were straight-forward and took less than 10 minutes. The only three things on my wish list would be for the software to remember the chosen resolution for subsequent scans, a slightly larger case to more easily store the cord with the scanner, and for the ability to change the background color as, unless you place the items on paper, the background comes out black. Good choice otherwise.

Digital camera Review: Does the job!!!
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this for my wife. She is a nurse on a specialized mental health unit. There are an enormous amount of forms to be filled in and, due to changing situations among the patients and state requirements, forms are often changed with little notice.

The scanner loads these forms into her laptop and she can fill them in with the proper information and send it to their network printer. She can print them for distribution among the staff needing them. She can change existing forms to meet their needs quite easily.

The scanner performs very well for text and lines. Graphics are not as good but, it wasn't intended to render high resolution pictures.

It is small, lightweight and a big plus is, that you don't have to haul a "power brick" around. It is powered by your USB port. My wife hasn't noticed any problems with power but, I would reccomend that it is used most of the time when you are plugged into an AC source.

It is quiet, convenient, works as it was described and priced reasonably.

Digital camera Review: Doesn't work on Vista 64 Bit
Summary: 4 Stars

I jumped the gun on this. I bought it because I saw it's compatible on Vista, but it's not compatible on the 64 bit platform.

I asked the customer service rep at Pentax about this and was told they have no plans on supporting the 64 bit platform.

Otherwise, it worked great when I use to have XP :(

Digital camera Review: Easier set up on Mac than on Windows.
Summary: 2 Stars

Easier set up on Mac than on Windows.

The fact that there are no printed instructions complicates installation. This requires finding the appropriate parts of the manual on the CD and printing them. If you haven't printed enough material or the correct material, you have to stop the installation process and go back to the CD.

It took about 45 minutes to get the scanner working with Windows.

The CD is an old fashioned Windows only type. It's amazing that Pentax does not know how to make a CD readable by both Windows and Macs (others do). Pentax has a Mac driver on their website which installed easily.

It took about 7 minutes to get the scanner working on the Mac OS.

I purchased this scanner to take on the road. It appears well suited for that as it is small and light. The scan quality is good for the price, but not as good as what you would get with a flat bed scanner.

The lack of software (except for the TWAIN driver) is not a problem for Mac users because most Mac applications, including Preview, Image Capture, and Word all have the ability to control a scanner.

Why the two star rating?

No printed manual
Mac software not on CD
Manufactured in a Communist country.
