Digital camera reviews of Pentax SMC DA* Series 50-135mm f/2.8 ED IF SDM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Pentax and Digital SLR Cameras

Digital camera Review: Don't wait as long as I did to purchase this lens
Summary: 5 Stars

I waited far too long to purchase this lens. This lens is everything I hoped it would be -- Fast, accurate and virtually silent autofocus. Color and bokeh are fantastic -- It is everything I've come to expect from Pentax!

Digital camera Review: Excellent and versatile lens... a MUST HAVE!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first DA* lens and I must say I am very impressed. I am sad to say that my camera slipped off of a shelf from alomost 5 feet and on to a granite floor. The camera suffered virtually no damage and the lens was perfect, not a mark or a scratch. Both worked perfectly after the fall. I am very impressed with pentax. This is a great lens, it is great for outdoor shots and can produce some excellent evening as well as some indoor shots. If you like lots of low light photography you may want to get a faster lens but at 2.8 it performs real well. I can definately say this is a very sharp lens and dont listen to all the pentax haters out there pentax makes some of the best products in my opinion. Also pentax has a long history and with so many lenses that will fit their camera bodies you just cant go wrong. The DA* 50-135 is a pretty large lens so be ready for the heft, although it is still smaller then similar lenses from canikon. All movement is within the lens wich is a nice feature. The sdm focus motor is virtually silent, all to be heard is the movement of the parts inside the lens while focusing. Focusing is fairly quick and can hunt a tiny bit if you are really close (remember its not a macro lens) to the subject or there is an extreme lack of light. This is normal for pentax and i have the k20d but i think it is much improved with the k7. Either way the focusing is still excellent and would not be a problem for most people, it is still plenty fast. I have done a little macro work with this lens and the images are pretty nice.... had to crop a little and the images came out a little soft but it is capable of a little macro work wich is nice, just remember you will probably have to manually focus if you want to do any macro. I posted two pics in the customer image gallery and they are both in a strip mall during the evening.... beautifull lens. I highly recommend this lens it is very versatile. I have only really been able to test this lens for about a day and look forward to using it for some portrait/glamour shots. If you are looking for a pro grade lens get it. If you dont have any da* lenses i think this is perfect for your first DA* lens. I promise you will be pleased!

Digital camera Review: Excellent lens
Summary: 5 Stars

I had the Tamron 70-200 for about 3 months, and I thought it was amazing. The focusing on it was a little slow for my taste, but what eventually got me was the short end of the lens was too long. I decided I made the wrong choice and bought this one. So far so good... This lens has been great. The focusing is super quiet and fast (compared to the Tamron. I would say the colors are about equal. This is all just my opinion, but if you are trying to decide between this and the tamron 70-200. I would go with this lens... especially if you plan on shooting indoors. I found the 70mm to be too long for indoor shooting (too long for living room not a church). On that note if you plan on shooting weddings I would go with this lens. The noise from the Tamron would get a bit embarrassing.

Digital camera Review: Excellent piece of glass!!
Summary: 5 Stars

After hearing so many different reviews of this particular lens, I've decided to give it a try since the range and aperture is to my liking.

After fitting this onto my K10d the first thing I noticed was the near silent focusing, the speed is not noticeably faster, but it is definitely very very quiet.
Photos from wide open are just as good as smaller apertures and I am very happy with the results I have gotten from this lens, clean and sharp images.

Overall very worthwhile purchase and I am very glad to have it

Digital camera Review: Excellent so far
Summary: 4 Stars

I have been using this lens for a couple of weeks now. I purchased to shoot my daughter's cheerleading competition in Disney World. In fact I am sitting in the airport now waiting for my plane to Orlando, while writing this. I bought this lens to replace a Sigma 70-200mm zoom.

So far this is a much better lens. The SDM motor is great. Much faster and quieter than the motor in the SIgma (not HSM) I spent over $900 for the Sigma lens a few years ago. There is no detectible back or front focus as I have experienced with my Sigma lenses on my K10D.

I will add more after my trip.
