Digital camera reviews of Philips DVP5140 Multiformat DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media Support

Digital camera Review: A great little region free DVD player
Summary: 4 Stars

I've had this player for about a week now and so far, so good. After putting in the code to make it region free, it has been able to play all my PAL DVDs with no problem (as well as NTSC.) The quality of this device is really good so far. My only complaint is with the remote; there is no open/close button on the remote. Oh, and there seems to be some kind of energy saving thing going on because it powers off after about 1/2 hour of not using it. I guess I'll have to look through the settings to see if I can change that... But otherwise, I've been happy. Definitely worth the price!

Digital camera Review: A little bit loud, but otherwise, very nice
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered this DVD player for the PAL + NTSC playing ability. Truly, all of my PAL DVDs play on it as well as my NTSC. It is very thin and light and when seeking or changing chapters etc.., the DVD player is LOUD. While actually playing DVD's it's as quiet as can be. And as a side note, when the DVD is playing the "ROOT" menu, from across the room, without glasses, it looks like the display says "POOT". Small minds are easily amused I guess. Buy this DVD player and you can see what I mean.

Digital camera Review: A real pain to work with
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a pretty basic DVD player and I wasn't expecting a whole lot of fancy features but the basic sequence of turning it on, ejecting it to add/remove a disc, and closing it is a real pain.

It won't turn on automatically when you press eject, so to start from the off position you need to press the power button, wait for it, then press the eject button and wait for it. It seems like it shouldn't be that big of a deal, but I've had a lot of dvd players that would just power on and eject when you press eject and it wasn't so much of an issue. This makes you wait at least 30 seconds after pressing power before pressing eject, and it seems like if you press eject twice (because you are getting frustrated) it cancels the previous eject.

The remote control is also very sensitive to angles so I find myself having to press the buttons repeatedly and contort my body into all sorts of positions to make it work.

The other day was the last straw. It seemed it froze up on me and would not power off or eject, so I had to climb behind the entertainment center to unplug it.

Digital camera Review: A versatile player with a bafflingly missing feature.
Summary: 4 Stars

No step? I'm trying to watch Lost Season 2, episode 23rd Psalm--one which would be greatly enhanced by the frame-by-frame feature (or Step on most DVD players)--and I cannot make this happen. I've looked through the entire manual on-line, and I just don't think it's capable of stepping through video content frame by frame. The best I can do is a 1/32 second speed. This is close, but you cannot go from this speed to paused easily because if you press the pause/play button at this speed, it goes back to full-speed play. :(

Other than this, and the LoooooooNG time it takes to eject the disc tray after recovering from Standby mode, I don't really have any complaints. It played all of my family home movies encoded in Koepi-build XVid just fine. :-)

Digital camera Review: ABSOLUTE PIECE OF JUNK - DON'T BUY!!
Summary: 1 Stars

Not unlike the other reviewer said, mine stopped dead after six months. This is an absolute piece of junk. Should have known by the pricing. Don't waste your time or money on any Philips products. They are a complete rip-off. I have a twelve year old Toshiba - one of the first DVD players made - and it is still going strong.
