Digital camera reviews of Philips DVP5140 Multiformat DVD Player with DivX, MP3, Windows Media SupportDigital camera Review: Excellent Value for Money Summary: 4 StarsI purchase the regular Philips DVP5140 DVD player from Amazon and successfuly configured it to a region-free DVD player. It played all my DVD from USA, UK, New Zealand, and Asia without any problem. I think it is an excellent choice.
However, I am a bit surprised to find that the remote is very primitive, e.g., it does not have an Open/Close button, the standard Fast Forward, Fast reverse buttons are missing too (right and left arrow buttons does the job). I am unable to assign five stars to this product because of the deficiencies in the remote design. Otherwise it is an excellent value for your money. Otherwise it's an excellent product for the price.
Digital camera Review: Poor design and build quality Summary: 2 Starsthe only reason to consider this player is the fact that you can program it to play mutiregion DVDs with a minimum of fuss. apart from that, it's a shoddy product. the build is flaky - the buttons are absurdly small and cheap-feeling. and the remote - don't get me started; it is so poorly designed that you practically have to be standing right in front of the unit at close range to use it (the remote's infrared transmitter is so recessed on the underside of the remote that there is an extremely limited set of angles at which it can work). this effectively defeats the point of having a remote. did anyone properly test this thing? the absence of track advance buttons on the unit itself isn't great either. overall, this is simply a shoddy product, even more flakily-designed and made than its decent predecessor, the DVP 642. i'd recommend buying it ONLY as your multiregion DVD player for occasional use. if you want a well-designed, user-friendly workhorse for everyday use, look elsewhere.
Digital camera Review: Region 2 delivers disappointing results Summary: 3 StarsI was looking for a DVD player that would play PAL video and region 2 DVD. This player was billed as the solution. While it does play PAL video (which, by the way, requires a PAL-compatible TV), it balks when it comes time to play a region 2 DVD. All I get is a "region error" message. So...I still have to rip and burn my region 2 discs as "region free" before they'll play, though the good news is that I don't have to lose any resolution (or a considerable block of time) from NTSC conversions.
Digital camera Review: GREAT dvd player... Summary: 5 StarsThis is an amazingly good dvd multiformat player. I bought it to play several PAL format dvds from England as well as a Region 0 music dvd which would not play in my Region 1 dvd player, and it played all of them immediately and flawlessly. I didn't even have to enter any codes to get them to play, so perhaps this multiformat dvd player was already preset on Region 0. In any case, I am delighted with this dvd player and would highly recommend it.
Digital camera Review: Great Player for the Price Summary: 4 StarsI've had this DVD player for about 3 weeks now and it's played everything I put in it. The picture is high quality and the features provide everything I would use. The one downside is the manual. The instructions and layout are kind of skimpy. But the player is well worth the money.
