Digital camera reviews of Philips DVP5982 HDMI 1080p DivX Ultra DVD PlayerDigital camera Review: Illegal DVD player. Summary: 1 StarsThe sound system quit working while it was still under the manufacturer's warranty. I called Philips directly and they were willing to replace my DVD player until they discovered that it was sold by VCT electronics as an All-Region Player. Philips doesPHILIPS - ALL REGION 1080p UPSCALING HI-DEF MULTI REGION DIVX CERTIFIED DVD PLAYER. PLAYS PAL/NTSC DVDS FROM ANY COUNTRY ON AMERICAN TV. not sell such a player in the United States since it is illegal--something I did not know. Before it was sold to me on Amazon, the DVD player had been cracked open and illegal software had been added, thus voiding the warranty. That software was flimsy and poorly written and didn't work well from the get-go. The sound track would sometimes flip off track and we would have to shut the player off and start it over. It eventually gave out completely. It lasted with intermittent use for over the 90-day return and refund policy of both Amazon and VCT Electronics, so now we have a player that works without a sound track and no way to return it under the warranty because it was illegally tampered with. We are out almost $100. We are not amused.
Digital camera Review: Worked great for a few months..... Summary: 1 StarsLike the other 'one star' reviewers, this DVD player has given up the ghost after only 5 months. From one day to the next the screen turned a bright orange when no DVD was played and when a DVD was played the colors were all off with a strong orange tint. Apparently Philips do not sell this product directly so it looks like the seller is unlocking these DVD players before selling them. I'm not optimistic about any kind of warranty resolution. Buy at your own risk.
Digital camera Review: I couldn't imagine a better player Summary: 5 StarsFor the last 5 months this player has played one or two discs per day, sometimes more. I haven't found anything it wouldn't play. I've had everything from Sony's to dollar store garbage and none of them ever play for any great length of time.
Save yourself a lot of aggravation and a lot of money, at this price it may be one of the better deals on Amazon - you can't go wrong with this one.
I'm here to buy another one for a different room.
Digital camera Review: Avoid at all Costs! Summary: 1 StarsReceived product and immediately replaced my old HDMI DVD player with this one. My daughter was able to watch 2 DVD's that evening. The next morning when she tried to watch a 3rd DVD, the entire TV movie was green. The DVD player had an orange screen when no DVD in player. I tested the TV with my Verizon Fios cable channels and the TV worked fine. I unplugged the DVD player power cord and plugged it back in. The colors returned to normal. However, now there was no audio. I replaced the HDMI cable with one that worked and still no audio. I tested the cable on another DVD player and the cable worked fine. I tested the component and audio outputs on the Philips player. They worked...however, I didn't buy this HDMI DVD player just to have to use component or composite cables!!!
For those people that have not had any problems with this unit...I am happy for you. However, I won't be buying another Philips HDMI Up-Conversion DVD Player again! There are plenty of other players on the market for less money that work for more than a few hours!
Digital camera Review: Uber-Satisfied... however... Summary: 5 StarsAfter using this product heavily over the course of the last two weeks, I'd have to conclude that I am thoroughly satisfied both in quality and features of this DVD player. The picture quality is robust and sharp, the controls are logical and intuitive, and it's ultra quiet and sleek to boot. I especially like the fact that I can pop a DVD out, play a different one, come back to the first, and then the original DVD will pick up from exactly where you left off in the movie before. For someone who's been using an XBOX to watch DVD's all this time, I certainly appreciate this feature, and I kinda feel like a caveman who's finally ventured outside of his cave. : )

[EDIT]
However... I just discovered WHAT Philips does NOT tell you when it comes to playing AVI files (burned to DVD or watched from a flash drive). The MAXIMUM play-time is 4 hours, 20 minutes (approx.). This is approximately a 2 Gb file. At this point, the AVI will cut off and not finish.
The fix for this of course is to split the larger AVI files.
Why is having AVI capability so important? So you can easily watch AVI video without the extra work of authoring a DVD. I'm wondering how Philips could exclude from their Instructions the MAX Play-Time (file size) of AVI files, especially considering how important this feature is.
