Digital camera reviews of Philips- DVP5990 - Multi Region DVD Player 1080P - upscalingDigital camera Review: Definitely not a SONY! Summary: 2 Stars
I just got this DVD player a week ago. I have never had any problems with electronic items until now.
I generally use SONY products for entertainment and I figured that I might as well try a lower quality brand and chose this DVD player because of the price.
First of all, I cannot figure out how to program the remote. The code given must be incorrect. I am unable to put my TV into DVD mode without using the older remote from my SONY, which still works but it is not an all region DVD player.
I just put my first DVD in a little while ago and all that I hear is buzzing that gets louder and softer intermittently. This was very annoying. The picture quality is good.
I discarded the box out that it came in or I would return it, but I think that I may just use it as a secondary player. I guess that I will be looking at a new all region SONY player shortly. Apparently my hunch was right: stick to SONY!
I would not recommend this player to anyone at all.
Digital camera Review: Disc Tray Won't Open Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this DVD player for a spare room three months ago. I checked everything to see if it worked when I got it and everything was fine. Because it's in a spare room though, it hasn't been used since. Today I tried to watch a DVD on it and the tray wouldn't open. I tried everything to get it to open, but nothing worked. I'm hoping the seller will work with me on an exchange, but for now, I can't recommend this DVD player.
Digital camera Review: Does not come region free but in a few simple steps it's REGION FREE Summary: 5 Stars
I just purchased the Philips DVD player DVP5990 (1080P) at BEST BUY & it works just fine. Mind you, this DVD player does not come ready as REGION FREE as Best Buy had told me, but with a few easy steps it can be region free. I'm playing my world region DVDs with no trouble what so ever. This is what i did to make my new DVD player region free. (DISCLAIMER: Do this at your own risk & FREE WILL, i am NOT RESPONSIBLE if you mess up on the instructions. If you feel uncomfortable doing so, then DON'T DO IT, whether or not you believe that this may void your warranty is TOTALLY up to you. Do not mess with other settings unless you feel comfortable doing so & again, "you doing so at YOUR OWN FREE WILL". Remember, if i decide to jump off a cliff, no one is telling you to follow).
1. Turn on DVD player
2. Be sure there is no DVD/CD in the tray
3. Close the tray door
4. Press Setup on your remote control
5. Using the circular control arrows (around the OK button),
press on the right arrow > 3 times to select Preference Page,
6. Point remote at DVD player & press 1 3 8 9 3 1 this will bring up the Region Code.
7. Use the up/down arrows(around the OK button) to change region code to 0 (ZERO)
Press OK on your remote.
You should now be region free & able to play any region DVD as i am able to. Try your DVDs to see if it works. Also, i have read many reviews on this player acting up & konking out. REMEMBER, if you order this via MAIL, you have to consider the possible damage that your DVD player might incur with outside deliveries like,... being dropped, kicked, thrown, stepped on, crushed, etc. This kind of action can ruin the alignment of the innards and make it run improperly or konk out. If your box arrives damaged then you know it's been through something. You can buy this unit at many stores & even save on shipping. Enjoy this well made unit as I am. Philips has always made quality products & I own several.
Digital camera Review: Doesn't play all multi-region dvds Summary: 5 Stars
I bought two and have used them for about 8 months. Last week, I threw in a Disney DVD I bought in Czech Republic and in the upper left corner of the screen were the words "Region Err". There was no other error message. I put the same DVD in my JVC multi-region player and it worked fine. I tried to contact the seller by email, but no response.
Two weeks later - After doing some research, I discovered that my machines were not set to be region free from the factory. I was able to do the following to play my Czech DVD:
Turn on the DVD player and open the DVD drawer.
On the remote, press Setup.
Click the right arrow 3 times to select the Preferences tab.
With the tab selected (Don't press OK, press 1,3,8,9,3,1.
This displays the region setting.
Press the up or down key to select "0".
Press OK.
To check the current region setting:
Turn on the DVD player and open the DVD drawer.
On the remote, press Setup.
With the General Options tab selected, press 1 3 7 9.
I changed my rating to 5 stars as everything works great now.
Digital camera Review: Easy Install, Drop in a DVD and Go! Summary: 5 Stars
I just received my Phillips DVP5990 - Multi Region DVD Player and I just had to comment that this product is great! I lived in the UK for 3 1/2 years and amassed a large collection of Region 2 (PAL) DVDs. I still buy and receive gifts from people from Amazon.co.uk in Region 2 format. I had a DVD player that I had hacked to be region free, but it recently died and thought it was finally time to invest in a region free player. I was very impressed with other customer reviews (though I am leary of the lifespan and will continue to use my other DVD player for the majority of my DVD viewings). I also couldn't believe the reasonable price (I had priced region free players a few years ago and it was astounding how expensive they were). The set-up was extremely easy (plug in the red-white-yellow cables that COME WITH the DVD player to it and your TV, plug in the power cord and you are ready to go). I dropped in a Region 2 just to test it and it worked a treat (no need to select a region or input a hack code to get it set-up for viewing a DVD outside Region 1)! I'm probably going to get an HDMI cable as I have an HD TV, but I just wanted to be sure it worked before I invested in the pricer cable as I knew from another review that it did come with cables in the box). Overall I am completely satisfied with the unit and the price. It is extremely sleek, light and takes up very limited space. Even if it only last 12 months, I will most likely buy the same unit to replace it as it was just so easy to install and use.
