Digital camera reviews of Pinnacle Studio MovieBox Ultimate

I just wanted to download a couple dozen VHS tapes before they degraded any further. My last version of Adobe Premiere with a break out box for capturing analog video is 6 years old on a six year old machine - it barely boots anymore much less video editing. Anyway this product seemed like the easy affordable way to go.
I should have read the reviews more carefully!
DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT!
I installed this on a fairly new, fast, loaded Vista machine and it worked right away on my first tape.
I then spend some time downloading a bunch of DV tape from an old camera, which is also preparing to expire.
I was using a separate dedicated 2TB external hard drive hooked up to ESATA - its just as fast as an internal drive.
When I got back to my VHS tapes Pinnacle would no longer capture analog video from my VCR. I tried everything, changing drives, reinstalling with and without current patches, changing USB ports, yelling, etc
Nothing worked, still dropping 1000s of frames and out of sync audio.
What worked once now makes my machine very unstable, customer support was a complete waste of time as seems to be common with Pinnacle.
I finally gave up and purchased a canopus ADVC 110 and Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 (I have a Sony camcorder HDR-SR11 - Great Camera!). If only I could get back that week of my life a wasted with camera Review: No support of the Product.
Summary: 1 Stars I bought this product in hopes that I would be able to convert my AV camcord tapes over to a digital format. The Product out of the box did not work satifacturely. My computer was a dual core intel 2.66GHZ with Windows XP. I emailed support, which was coming out of India, and I described the problem and was on line with them for about a half hour with very little results. I asked a couple of questions and the next thing I knew I had been disconnected. I decided to returne the product back to Amazon with no problems. I wish that there was a reliable product out there to do the AV / Digital conversion.

The program could not find the USB Driver 99% of the time and when it did, there were too many frames dropped to make the movie. I have tried it with Windows Vista and Vista will not read analog files so I purchased a new laptop from Dell with Windows XP and tried it with this system. It did work when the program could find the driver but it was really frustrating working with the product.

Studio Moviebox Ultimate USB2 Pro Effects & Greenscreen

Bought this to replace an ATI video/encoder card.

The Pinnacle hardware/software combination drops frames when encoding analog video.

My computer more than meets all the minimum requirements. All extraneous processes are shutoff when I was using this (Anti virus, firewall, network etc.)

Interestingly, when I use the hardware encoder in combination with Roxio's Easy Media Creator software the analog video encoding works fine with no dropped frames. So I am using that combination of Pinnacle's hardware and Roxio's software for the encoding.

I have not used the Studio software (for other than encoding - which it does not do well), looks pretty capable for editing but I will have to update this review when I start doing editing.

Summary: 4 Stars

The Moviebox was difficult to set up but with the help of Pinnacle Technical support it is now running very well. More detail in "Things that go wrong" could have helped me to sort out the setting up. FAQ's are extensive but searching for the solution required didn't match up with the questions I made.
The Studio software is intuitive to use with drag and drop being an easy way to construct a movie. Sound can treated the same way. Narration and music can be added on separate tracks with pro fading available to emphasise the sounds. With so many features available it will take me a long time to explore and use them.
I have not used the titles and fx's but as time goes on I'm sure I will.
Overall, the analogue video capture is excellent and the software easy to use. The possibilities seem endless.
