Digital camera reviews of Pioneer DV-393-S Progressive Scan DVD Player with Div-X

Digital camera Review: Good price and does exactly what is advertised to do, right out of the box
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this DVD player with the hopes it would do what it is advertised to do, play DVDs from all over the world. I am currently only interested in playing DVDs from the US and UK, so that is all I can report on. Right out of the box the DVD player played a US DVD and a UK DVD without any manipulations or hacks. The player recognized DVDs from both regions with no problem. It also played a slide show of pictures I had on a CD in .jpeg format. The quality of picture and sound are good for the normal person wanting to enjoy a good movie. For the price and convience of watching DVDs from all over the world, this DVD player is worth buying. I am even buying one for a friend who has not been able to watch her English DVDs since moving to the states.

Digital camera Review: GREAT DVD PLAYER FOR THE PRICE...PIONEER DID IT AGAIN!
Summary: 5 Stars

Pioneer is a brand I trust. On all cars I have had I have always used pioneer radios. On my current truck I have a pioneer dvd/mp3/cd/tunner/etc player. This dvd player is trully good for the price. The video/audio outputs are very nice. The control is user friendly. You cant go wrong with this dvd player. I recommend it.

Digital camera Review: Not as durable as it should be
Summary: 2 Stars

First off, everything that has been said about this DVD player is spot-on. Multi-region code free is a great asset to have. So does the memory playback that automatically resumes from where you left off (watching DVDs). One particular feature is the widescreen setting (which my previous 2 DVD players don't have) that automatically plays a movie in its full screen aspect ration on a widescreen TV.

Unfortunately, I can only delight in this unit for 2 days. It is too sensitive to Progressive setting (when not properly wired to a TV with Progressive scan feature). This causes the DVD player to display a green discoloring on the screen that, despite every step taken per the manual to resolve, cannot go away. Even after setting the unit back to Interlace, the discoloring does not go away. If anything, it got worse. By the next day, discolorings of blue and red become evident. (N.B. According to the unit manual, if the TV does not support Progressive Scan, the screen will not display video. It does not turn green!)

To make matters worse, the DV-383S' warranty does not extend to American consumers. American warranties are only valid for 'Region 1' only products. So for the DV-383-S, the product description's claim that "if your DVD player ever becomes defective we will fix it for free" is false. According to Pionner Customer Service, the only option is to buy a brand-new unit (because the repair costs exceed the price of the DVD player itself; replacement is not even an option). But that's the risk you take when you buy a multi-system DVD player.

I had heard nothing but excellent word-of-mouth of Pioneer products. This is my first Pioneer DVD player. For it to malfunction as it did after two days is a great disappointment. However, it has not shaken my confidence in Pioneer. Just only the DV-383-S models.

Digital camera Review: Decent Price, Decent Quality- Finally!
Summary: 5 Stars

Three times must be a charm. This is my third purchase of a DVD player in about 4 years. Without naming the brands of the other two, it's sufficive to say that they were'nt top of the line models but then again they were'nt at the bottom either. I've always heard of Pioneer electronics and seen them from afar but never purchased any myself until now. In the past, Pioneer was very "high-end" and could never really justify the cost difference when there was comparable, less costly products available. When my current DVD player kept giving me periodic errors and having read various message boards with all the possible causes, I decided to look for a decent brand name DVD Player and maybe spend a little more on it so as to get decent quality. I was surprised to run across this Pioneer model in the price range that it is. Being so new, there weren't that many reviews posted for it yet and those that were out there were conflicting. I went ahead and chose this model and now that I have tried it out I must say that it is everything that I was searching for. There is a definite improvement in picture quality when compare to my previous player. With it being Pioneer's lowest cost model, I expected it to be chincy (like Sony's low end stuff) but that's not the case with this unit. Features, although they may be somewhat basic when compared to some of the others out there, are useful and very functional. Sometimes simple is better. The main function of the player (providing picture and sound) has to be top notch otherwise all the other bells and whistles don't mean a thing. This one definitely has that part down pat. The other features and functions seem to work much better and faster than my previous players. As advertised, it plays most formats out there or atleast everything that I have. To sum it up, it's the best DVD player in the price range and even in the next higher price range as far as I'm concerned. As far as strengths and weaknesses go, I'd have to say it strength is it's overall quality and for it's weakness I can only come up with it's on-screen display- it could stand to take up a little less space on the screen. Decent price for a decent quality product- FINALLY!

Digital camera Review: A useful product

Works great for region 1 and 2, just like described, with no technical knowledge required. The design is very slim.
