Digital camera reviews of Plantronics DSP-400 Digitally-Enhanced USB Foldable Stereo Headset and Software

Digital camera Review: Excellent USB Headset for Windows & Mac
Summary: 5 Stars

Works perfectely on my MacBook Pro in OSX as well as when I boot into Windows Vista. Excellent for online gaming. Clear sound. Others hear me very well. In Windows you may have to go to audio devices and select the headset as default so that it becomes activated. Of course, in OSX, no fiddling is required, the system automatically switches to the headset for input and output when you plug it in.

Very comfortable on the ears, very light. I would highly recommend this headset.

Digital camera Review: Excellent for Skype and music
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this primarily for Skyping for work. The sound clarity is excellent, and nobody has complained that they can't hear me. The clarity for music is excellent as well. I would buy it again.

Digital camera Review: Excellent quality - questionable design
Summary: 4 Stars

First the good news. This is a very high quality headset, for desktops. Voice quality is excellent. I've used it for Skype, Dragon and for voice overs on instructional videos. The microphone is clear, the noise canceling works well and it outputs good volume. I don't know if it has the range for singing but for spoken word it's great. The inline mute switch is a nice extra.

The headphones are also of good quality, easily the match of any headset in the price range, even those that lack mics. They are comfortable for extended wearing and seem reasonably durable.

The bad news comes if you want to travel with the headset. It is bulky, somewhat heavy for a folding set and the box on the end of the cord is rather large, though not as heavy as it looks.

I wonder what the designers were thinking. The ability to fold would lead me to think that this was designed for portability but the bulkiness and weight are a bit high, but not terrible, for that purpose.

Still, I'm very happy with the headset and can live with the bulk for the few times I need to take it out of the office.

Digital camera Review: Excellent sound and ease of use.
Summary: 5 Stars

Excellent headphones. Good sound quality both on listening and the mic picks up well without a lot of environmental garbage. The mute is easy to use and lights up nicely to remind you that you are on mute. I had a problem on other headsets forgetting I was on mute and trying to talk to others.

The chord is nice and long to allow fairly free movement while on the headset. On some systems I have noticed the mute light coming on after having been plugged in a long time, but unplugging the USB connection and reconnecting clears this easily.

Well supported on XP and Vista.

Digital camera Review: Excellent sound quality
Summary: 4 Stars

The Plantronics DSP-400 is a good quality USB headset. On Macs there are no drivers to install, they work great right out of the box. The sound quality is excellent and they are terrific for Internet telephony via Skype (see [...]for software). The headset collapses and folds in half to make carrying in a computer bag easier, however, this set of hinges also makes it feel flimsy. I've been using it successfully for over a month with no problems. If I was buying today I'd opt for the slightly more expensive DSP-500 as they seem a bit sturdier than the -400 model as they don't fold and seem to have a more ridgid construction. Aside from that feature, this headset is a good bargain and the sound quality for telephony or just listening to music is terrific. The earphones rest comfortabley on top of the ear and allow for ambient room sound to enter, which is good in an office environment so you can hear your co-workers when they come into your office.
