Digital camera Review: Disappointing results
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this scanner hoping to scan film negatives from my 1000's of print photos. I had previously been scanning the prints using a flatbed scanner and was looking for better quality results.

I found the software installation to be very time consuming and the instructions were not at all clear as to what was minimally required to operate the scanner.

Getting the negatives properly positioned in the holder was a chore as the holder hinges at the end and the curl of the negatives constantly worked against my efforts to align the negatives.

I tried a few strips of negatives using default settings and I was amazed to see the size of the image files - >25MB per image at the highest resolution. I hoped that this meant better quality but that was not to be the case as the results were grainy and the color did not match the prints.

Similar results were achieved after adjusting settings and using other negatives.

Bottom line: An expensive product that is tricky to use and yields results that are no better than flatbed scans of print photos. It might work great for slides but I would not recommend it for negatives.

Digital camera Review: Does a good job
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm very happy with this product, for the most part. It does a good job scanning slides, and the software is very user-friendly. You can easily rotate slides, and the built-in image correction function is really very good. There is a lamp on the top that allows you to quickly look at a slide without putting it thru the machine and having it scanned, so that you can eliminate slides that you don't want to take the time to scan.
A couple of issues that aren't really problems- the default image type that the scanner uses is .tiff, but when I tried to open the images using Paint Shop Pro, I got an error message indicating that PSP could not open the file type. I've never seen a picture type that PSP couldn't open before, and it can usually open .tiff files. This left me saving the images as jpeg, which was ok for my requirements, but it might be an issue for other users.
The one problem I do find with this unit is that the detents on the sliding tray seem overly subtle to me- it's not that easy to feel it click into place, and many times I've scanned an image only to find that I've only got half of the image on the screen and I have to reposition and then re-scan. I've gotten around this by making little marks on the sliding tray that show when it's properly aligned.
All in all, i find this to be a very good solution to digitallizing all of my old slides, and it's really great to be able to view all of those shots from the past and be able to actually do something with the images!!

Digital camera Review: Does exactly what it is supposed to do.
Summary: 5 Stars

This product does what it was intended to do. I have a multitude of 35mm slides ranging from 30 to 50 years old that I just retrieved from the attic. I am well into the collection now as I digitize and preserve these irreplaceable images. This scanner is reasonably priced and I an thankfull that I found it.

Digital camera Review: Does not work with Mac OS
Summary: 1 Stars

Imagine my excitement when I finally find a film scanner (OpticFilm 7200) with such high reviews on the internet, after trying many solutions for digitizing a collection of 5,000+ slides... Only to find out this product cannot support Mac OS. Given the current upswing in market share of Mac products (MacBook and MacBook Pro hold position #7 and 8 on the Bestsellers in Computers & PC Hardware on Amazon as of this review), it is very unfortunate that Plustek has chosen to ignore such a sizable market of creative types whom would benefit from having access to their products...

Sad, sad indeed....

Digital camera Review: Does what I needed it to do
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw many complimentary reviews on the 7200 before I ordered it, and I've been just as pleased with mine as the folks in those reviews were. The bundeled image editing software is good enough for me as a casual user. The 7200 is not blazing fast, but it suits me as a home user. I've done about five hundred slides over the past month and am completely pleased with the performance of the scanner so far.
