Digital camera reviews of Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film ScannerDigital camera Review: Don't bother with this one Summary: 1 Stars
Way too cumbersome to use. Installation isn't straight forward. Quality of scans were not that good. Returned it the same day it arrived!
Digital camera Review: Exceeds Expectations Summary: 5 Stars
Like many stated in reviews of this item, I purchased it to process thousands of slides I shot from 1965 on. Have tried several scanners in the past; they work but are slow and difficult to use for slides. The plustek scans one slide at a time, rather quickly, too. In the SilverFast-SE software, be certain to set the 'Output resolution" to at least 1800 dpi for best results when zooming in on a slide after it's loaded into your computer's photo program. That will afford good detail resolution. I'd buy this item again, it's easy to use and fully worth the expense.
Digital camera Review: Excellent Slide Scanner! Summary: 5 Stars
I had several hundred slides to scan, and started my project by purchasing an Epson flatbed scanner.....big mistake. I returned the Epson scanner, and purchased the Plustek 7200 scanner. Software installation was fairly easy, and the instructions that came with the unit were easy to follow. I was able to use the quickscan mode, and the results were fantastic. I tweaked the settings a little, and found that the 1200 dpi mode was best for me.
This scanner has two plastic holders that fit four slides each. The slides fit securely into the holders - feeding each slide holder into the scanner was a snap. If you have a large number of slides to scan - this is the scanner for you. Compared to a traditional flatbed scanner, the Plustek 7200 makes your workflow much easier. Highly recommended!
Digital camera Review: Excellent but it won't run on a Mac Summary: 4 Stars
We had been browsing for an affordable means to scan our family vacation kodachrome slides into the digital format for 4-5 years now and never quite found one -- until the Plustek Opticfilm 7200. The reviews featured on Amazon convinced me to give it a try and they were right on! Right out of the box the software loaded, the thing ran, the images were crisp and the software intuitive. Too bad we have Mac computers, though! Even the MacBook Pro with its Intel processor and rosetta software couldn't open up the Plustek drivers. I think the SilverFast would have run with a downloaded upgrade for Mac, but the scanner wasn't going to interface no-how. So we borrowed my son's big gaming computer (by AlienWare) and it set up and ran with ease. We are scanning, adjusting, naming, filing, and saving onto an external hard drive about 20 per hour. Terrific!
Digital camera Review: Excellent choice for it's purpose Summary: 5 Stars
I have a tremendous number of black-and-white negatives that I needed turned into prints (the original photos are long gone), but needed to stay within a budget. My seven-year-old Microtek flatbed scanner still runs great for documents and photos, and I tried using the slide/negative adapter, but at 600 dpi, the results were much less than what I require. I bought the Plustek Opticfilm 7200 and am quite pleased with the resolution, the ease of use and the software. At 7200 dpi, it shows a slight graininess (not unlike using Kodak Tri-X film) but nothing worth worrying about. The software shows options for higher resolutions (at a very high price of disk space), but I haven't tried them yet. The software is designed specifically for the purpose of processing transparencies and has yielded far better results than scanning negatives with my flatbed and reversing them to positive using Photoshop Elements. If there is a downside to this scanner, it is probably the limitations of media size; I could not scan my 2 1/4" x 3 1/4" negatives with it, and I would have to make a special holder for my old 126 and 127 film size negatives to fit the slide holder. Other scanners costing more that $1000 may have better end results, but for the money and for my purposes, this is perfect.
