Digital camera reviews of Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film Scanner

Digital camera Review: Good Quality Scanner/Poor Software
Summary: 4 Stars

We bought this scanner for my parents to scan the TONS of slides they have kept in the basement. I personally scanned around 300 slides. The quality of the scans is very good - but be prepared to wait. Scanning slides is time consuming. I found that I could scan around 40 slides an hour once I got going.

My only problem is the included scanner software. I found it clumsy and hard to use. If there is a way to use it without the provided software I haven't found it.

Overall, I would recommend this scanner. For the price you can't beat it, and you can put up with clunky software for good quality images.

Digital camera Review: Worked immediately
Summary: 5 Stars

Was scanning 35mm slides within minutes. Worked as promised and easy to use. Software and directions also easy to use.

Digital camera Review: A Best Buy
Summary: 5 Stars

My dad over the years has accumulated a sizable collection of slides that he has given to me. As I live in the digital age I needed an easy way to convert these to a digital format. It was down to this and another scanner and decided to go with it based upon previous Amazon reviews, as well as general appearance. As for setup it was done in as long as it took to load the software. Once loaded you hit the power button and then the button to initiate the imaging software and away you go. Being an IS person I wanted to see how easy it was to set up and begin scanning with little reading of the reference material. With just a few times that I needed to check the documentation I was scanning in no time. Considering that my dad's slides have been in the attic for close to 20 years the images that the scanner produced were very acceptable (issue due to heat, not the device or software). For the price I paid I have to say its a good scanner for the purpose it serves.

Digital camera Review: Not The Best Alternative For Me
Summary: 2 Stars

I unpacked the unit with great anticipation only to find out that it does not work with mac computers. Nevertheless, I proceeded to install in my Windows machine - my second choice.

First, I have a big problem with pretentious software installations. Te software that comes with this unit requires complex installation, lengthy unlock keys, and has a non-intuitive interface.

Second, after an excessive long time installing (what happened to "plug-n-play"?) I tried it and the results were very disappointing. The slides (only four at a time) do not come through very clear and there is a need for considerable color/brightness manipulation.

Maybe it works for a lot of people; for me, I made the mental accounting of how much money and time this alternative costs vs. sending my slides to a scanning service. I have about 1,000 slides; at most services, it will cost me between $200-$300 to can them all, not counting how much time I'll save. Also, they scan them at resolutions higher than 7200DPI.

Again, maybe it works great for some, but did not work great for me. I returned it.

Digital camera Review: Plustek 35mm scanner
Summary: 4 Stars

Easy set up with no glitches. Scans have good quality and reasonable speed. High quality scans are a bit slow, but for a scanner at this price lightning speed cannot be expected. My only significant criticism is the scanning software, that I find somewhat confusing to use and limited in color correction and editing at the pre-scan stage. Still, for the money it's a very good value.
