Digital camera reviews of Plustek OpticFilm 7200 7200DPI Film ScannerDigital camera Review: Good Quality Scanner/Poor Software Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this scanner for my parents to scan the TONS of slides they have kept in the basement. I personally scanned around 300 slides. The quality of the scans is very good - but be prepared to wait. Scanning slides is time consuming. I found that I could scan around 40 slides an hour once I got going.
My only problem is the included scanner software. I found it clumsy and hard to use. If there is a way to use it without the provided software I haven't found it.
Overall, I would recommend this scanner. For the price you can't beat it, and you can put up with clunky software for good quality images.
Digital camera Review: Good for slides: only so-so for negatives Summary: 3 Stars
Slide scanning work very well, sharp and clear. Negatives, however were notquite as clear and clean when scanned, even at higher resolutions.
Digital camera Review: Good hardware bad software Summary: 3 Stars
I found the hardware very easy to use. It consistently produced sharp copies of my slides, but the color was generally very poor, tending to purple. I spent several hours trying to use the included software to adjust the color and was able to get reasonable landscape tones, but never could get decent flesh tones. Fortunately, I own a copy of Adobe Photoshop, which does a great job of cleaning up the color. Without Photoshop, I would probably have returned this unit. Paired with Photoshop, it does a great job.
Digital camera Review: Good optical quality, poor documentation and software Summary: 4 Stars
The product delivers excellent quality for the price. Slide scanning is easy and the machine is beautifully calibrated. However, don't even think of installing the accompanying software if you're using Windows Vista. Instead, first download and install the latest scanner driver from Plustek. Then register the SilverFast software (a confusing process), download the latest version for your operating system. Some online users suggest that you need to purchase the latest SiverFast version, but that's not true. You can download the latest version for free if you first register the shipped software. It took me an hour of tinkering before I could scan my first slide, but it was worth it. This is probably the best negative and slide scanner in this price range. If you're willing to use a used model, you can find it even cheaper.
I would avoid calling Plustek customer support if you can. Trust me on that one.
Digital camera Review: Good scanner but ... Summary: 4 Stars
I had this scanner for about six months before it started to malfunction in that every scanned image had a streak across it. I sent it back to Amazon who were very nice and gave me nearly a full refund. The software that comes with the scanner is great. I was a bit dissapointed that every speck of dust on my 30 year old slides showed up but ... they were 30 year old images and the software does have a handy dust removal feature.
Overall, its a good scanner but I recommend buying the service protection plan.
