Digital camera reviews of Plustek Opticfilm 7300Digital camera Review: Great Scanner, Steep Learning Curve Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this scanner to convert my parents' aged and deteriorating slides to electronic format. I did a lot of research before buying, and many reviewers commented that Plustek scanners were great. They're absolutely right... this scanner converts negatives and slides to a digital format in great detail. The software included (I use the PC version) allows you to straighten the image, edit color levels and brightness, and do almost anything you want. With all of the options, though, it comes with a lot of learning. The publishers have included videos to show you how certain features work; they're recorded by a gentleman with a European accent which may cause some problems understanding the first time through. I haven't yet had to read the manual (included only on the CD, not in print copy), but you should expect to spend at least an hour playing around with the various options and seeing what they do. The manufacturer quotes a scan time of approximately 35 seconds per slide - be aware that this is for single pass scanning, and does not include multiple passes (for better dust/dirt removal) or processing time for despeckling or sharpening.
All in all, a great device (even packed with its own padded carry bag - use it and toss the original box into storage if you like) that offers a myriad of options for making your scanned pictures as good as you want them. Just be prepared to trade some of your time for increased quality.
Digital camera Review: Great little Scanner Summary: 5 Stars
The Plustek 7300 is a great little scanner for salvaging old slides.
I bought this about a week ago and have already scanned some 750 or so slides. Most of my slides are old dating from the early 70's.
The scanner and software was easy to set up and install... took only minutes.
The SilverFast SE plus software has lots of capabilities and is fairly intuitive.
I was not impressed with the Demo presentations of how to use the software however.
But figured most of it out by trial and error... still some I havent figured out
completely... but I was able to salvage each and every slide I scanned even though some were badly faded.
Digital camera Review: Great scanner, good software, try it with Picasa Summary: 4 Stars
Received the Plustek 7300 a few days ago and have been scanning several sets of slides since then from all types of film, cameras, and as far back as 30 years. So far I'm very pleased with the results.
My experience matches that of some other reviewers in that the IntelliScan option with SilverFast software is far superior to the QuickScan option. The SilverFast software requires some getting used to. If you have Photoshop experience, it will be relatively easy for you to port that knowledge over to SilverFast. If you don't have Photoshop experience, then I recommend being patient with learning the software and experimenting with it for a while before trying to slog through scanning a batch of slides. It's quite powerful but there are a lot of options to play with. The little videos that they have available in the toolboxes are worth watching. Scan the same slide several times with different options set so that you can see the results side by side.
I tend to like to play around with the settings and tweak each slide, so it can take a couple of minutes per slide for me to get what I want. I generally follow their little ScanPilot work flow diagram. I make special adjustments using Global Colour Correction and also brightness, contrast and saturation.
I had some trouble with what looked like a lack of dynamic range particularly in the darker colors that tended to streaks of purple. Then I downloaded Picasa and it was a HUGE difference! I now do a lot of the tweaking in Picasa and use Silverfast to just get things in the ball park. If you're having difficulty with getting used to Silverfast or the results you see on your screen, try downloading Picasa and using it for some of the editing.
We bought a cheaper scanner from a different manufacturer and were very unhappy with the result and so returned it. Then we bought this one from Amazon. The extra price seems to have been worth it.
Digital camera Review: Great way to retrieve old photos Summary: 5 Stars
This scanner works beautifully right out of the box. Very easy to digitize old slides, and have also scanned some old b/w negatives. Very quick and simple operation. Location of digital user manual is not immediately apparent, but is not really needed. I'm pleased, and have pleased others by surprising them with an email containing photos they'd forgotten, or never seen.
Digital camera Review: HOBBIEST / BEGINNER Summary: 5 Stars
I PURCHASED BY THE REVIEWS I READ. THIS ITEM IS COMPACT AND DOES WHAT IT SAYS, IT'S NOT THE FASTIEST BUT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO RECOVER ALL THOSE OLD PHOTOS AND SLIDES. I ALSO PURCHASED ADOBE PHOTO SHOP ELEMENTS VER.8 AND VUESCAN SOFTWARE WHICH ARE EASIER TO USE THAN THE SILVERFAST SOFTWARE IT COMES WITH. THIS TAKES A LITTLE LONGER BUT GREAT RESULTS. I'M VERY PLEASED WITH MY PURCHASE. VUESCAN SOFTWARE AT [...]
