Digital camera reviews of RCA Lyra RD2317FM 1 GB Digital Audio Player with FM TransmitterDigital camera Review: I'm calling it average Summary: 3 Stars
I have had this player 3 weeks-
The good: It does not pause, skip, jump, or jitter during the songs. While I have not packed the player completely full just to test this, I have had a nice playlist plus 2 complete books on it with no troubles. The toggle and buttons are secure and go where directed and do what they are told to do. The battery lasts a good long while. The voice record is clear and the player will delete voice files without having to hookup to the computer. The clip on the back is handy and secure and there is no danger of knocking the unit off accidentally. Having the clip option means that it can be stuck anywhere - the back of a shirt collar, on a purse strap, shirt pocket, the clip works like a baby monkey (though it does want to be pointed down).
The conflict: Leaving the player on pause for too long will cause it to turn itself off. Good if you are forgetful, bad if you have to do something that takes a minute or two then want to go back to where you left off.
The bad: The manual is pdf format only and the player is not completely intuative - you will need the manual. The FM transmitter is not worth choosing this player over another choice if you are debating on this player or a different player (get a cheap cassette transmitter for the car instead if it is an option or just run into CarToys and have them put in a plugin straight in to your sterio - it is a much clearer sound). There is no tagging or bookmarking capabilities for the MP3 or WMV formats so if you are listening to music or a book in those formats and you get interrupted you have to start all over or forget the rest of that section/song. The lack of bookmarking is a biggie, and there are others for the same money that have it. I consider this a dissappointment and the reason for calling it 'average'.
Update: I've been using the Lyra and my man's Sansa alternately for about 3 more months - and definately like the Sansa better now - it has a clunkier menu and no card option but it (Sansa) remembers where I was when I turned it off and starts right up at the same spot - Priceless! Particularly if you intend to listen to anything (even occasionally) of any length like a book (freebee .WMA format I borrowed from the online library). Starting at the beginning of my music list on the Lyra every single time I turn the player on again or having to page thru the list gets old too especially in the car when I would rather just plug into the radio and go. We Found the Sansa (with a little searching) online for about $10 or $15 more. It was worth it.
Digital camera Review: RCA's got a winner! You'll love the Lyra. Summary: 4 Stars
If you are looking for a superb MP3/WMA player at a reasonable price then the RCA Lyra RD2317FM 1 GB Digital Audio Player is for you.
Within minutes I had connected the Lyra and had songs ready to go. The included "sport" earphones clip over the ear and stay in place much better than ear-buds. 1GB is plenty for my needs -but even then I inserted my 512MB SD Card for added storage for my audio books.
The FM receiver is handy feature that allows you to listen to your favorite radio station. Also the FM Transmitter allows you to play your digital music through your car FM Radio giving everyone in the car the benefit of your Lyra. (Note: the FM Transmitter requires an Auto 12 volt DC power plug to operate.)
At first the shape seemed just trendy, but it actually fits nicely in the palm of my hand. The belt clip works great for belts and jogging shorts - I hardly notice it is there. (Or, use the included neck strap).
I would have scored this one a perfect 5 stars, but the menus respond with a slight delay. Otherwise the menu is easy to use and I find the joy-stick handy while jogging/walking.
Battery life is extra-ordinary! It uses a standard AAA battery - a big feature in my opinion.
This thing is tough! I've dropped it a number of times and the hard rubber case protects it well.
You can't go wrong with this one.
(...)I only did a brief test of the audio (voice) record function. Yes, it works as expected, but I'm sure it'll quickly decrease your battery life.
Digital camera Review: THRU-HIKERS!!! You need this MP3 player Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this for the trail. It was nearly impossible to find an MP3 player that runs on batteries, is water-resistant, durable, uses cards and has FM radio! This one is all of those things.
I won't disagree that it takes a hot second to figure out, but heck, what else are you going to do on the trail?
This is really a nifty little thing to have. Another thru-hiker owned one and recommended it to me...and I'm getting one for my hiking husband! They are great!
