Digital camera reviews of RCA/MSN TV 2 Internet and Media PlayerDigital camera Review: I LOVE IT! Summary: 5 Stars
I love MSNTV, this unit is not as good as the old Plus Units that unfortunately aren't being made anymore but it is still good for people who don't care that there are certain things you can't do with this that you can do on a computer but it's still a fun way to access the internet through your TV. BTW: don't believe the review from the guy who owns an Macintosh Apple computer that they can't be infected by viruses. as A former Apple computer owner I can say that isn't true and I lost my computer due to those pesty viruses. Any computer that has a hard drive can be infected by viruses but what's great about this MSNTV is that it can't be infected by viruses at all.
Digital camera Review: I OWNED 2 OF THESE UNITS, AND FOR MOST P;ART, THEY DID WHAT THEY PROMISED. Summary: 5 Stars
It has been approx. 2 yrs. since I last used my MSNTV-2 unit, which served me well for most of the 4 yrs. I owned it. (I had web-tv before this.) I can't imagine someone having trouble with the keyboard! I loved using it, and it performed perfectly any task of which it was requested. The user who had trouble must have had a bum one....My son first got for me the webtv, shortly after it came out; because, as he put it, "At this late date, (in my life) you probably don't want to go thru learning to use a computer; this is very simple to learn and to use." He was correct on both points. I used it for 2 years, with dial-up; neither broadband nor cable were available to me then. I used it for research, as a dictionary, etc., and began buying and selling on ebay with it. It didn't have the pic. box, so I had to use video camera, but it did work. Shortly after I moved to a new home, the MSN2 had been released, so my Son put that in for me, as part of a wireless home net-work system. It had many upgrades; now able to do much that the old one couldn't do, such as picture in-box, MSN word, PFD, and more, altho can't remember all off-hand. I had access to cable then, and loved working with it. It was situated directly across room; 12' from chair in which I sat to use it and the 32" TV, and the pic. quality was great, altho some people questioned that it shouldn't be. It was so nice and easy to do pics. with ebay, or just personally, and to select or delate then; one of the things I dislike with the Mac I am now using. The wireless adaptor worked great, as did card reader which was necessary for transporting pics. (I had no trouble with the MSN-recommended attachments; printer, wirless usb, picture card, etc.)...All was great until about 3 1/2 yrs. into it, it started hanging up; wouldn't budge, or would suddenly drop off. We changed out the router, which didn't help. I would re-boot, and it work few minutes, only. Then it started demanding "necessary upgrades", which in this case were all same ones, as opposed to legit. ones in past. I learned to dread the screen turning green just before it went out, and it was happening as often as multiple times a day, every day until the end; sooooo frustrating, because on those, phone line had to be plugged in for up to 4 HOURS. There was no circumventing these; unit would shut off, and if attempt was made to turn back on, there was message on green screen stating that upgrade had to happen first. I started saving them; the identical ones, and in the end, counted over 300. Was told by different cust. reps. that they were programmed, and they had no control over them. I spent more time with customer service than I did with my family, but nothing worked for over few minutes! Customer Service decided that it needed the 'fatal' boot, which would either fix or kill the box; it did neither. (Can't say too much good about them, for most part.) By now, I was hooked on internet, and was forced to learn a little bit about the computer, which I did while at my Sons's house babysitting. It was a slow go; no "help" links as were on MSNTV, but with some help and time, I was able to make a little progress, and my Son gave me his Mac because he needed/wanted new one for work. (There was very little that the Mac did that MSN box didn't that I needed, other than cd/dvd.) I disliked working with MAC Iphoto; kept remembering the pic box from MSNTV, so a friend who had gone to computer sold me his box, which was working at his house. (He was weaning his wife off it.) So I re-subscribed to MSN $9.99 service, hooked it up, and with help from Customer Service had all their lingering info removed and mine put in, and for about 30 min., I happily admired the pic. box. Then, same story, etc., screen turned green, and my heart sank! I plugged into phone line overnite, thinking maybe this is a real upgrade; ('tho not likely, because they don't require phone line,) but not to be. And, all the tricks from the old unit resumed here. Back to Cust. Service, who was at loss for any explanation as to why 2 units would do these identical things. (I had already switched my power plug for the one that came with my 'new unit,; and long ago had purchased new power strip, new card reader; which stopped working, and switched to the 'new' wireless usb connect.) By now, I was sick of trying, and canceled MSN service again, and have stuck with the Mac since. This was a strange happening; maybe power problem at that site? Not likely, because TV & recorder have no problems. Until this, I had no problems; never any of the ones of which I've read in these reviews. It's true, nothing can be uploaded from owner's end, but, there also are NO VIRUSES either! I'm giving high rating because of that; for the ease of using it, for the many help menus, and for the low cost, compared to even a used computer. At the cost, it wouldn't be out of line if a new one had to be purchased every four years. If I could have been guaranteed that a new one would have worked for me, I possibly would have tried one more time....NOTE: The $9.99 MSN charge is sufficient to get dial-up, and is required, even if you have DSL or cable.
Digital camera Review: I am very pleased Summary: 4 Stars
I have used webtv-msntv for the last 7 1/2 years. And just switiched to the msntv2 unit last month when my new msntv classic died after a year and a half. Sure at first wanted nothing to do with the msntv2 because I had heard of the problems people were having with it when it was first released.I am glad that I changed my mind.Right now I am using the dial connection which is still faster than it was with the other two units.I also like the e-mail set up better, among other things,Sure it still has growing pains but what doesn't!And the unit is updated, So if you are not a computer person. Why not give this unit a try As of January 4th 2009 after so many years of owning Webtv products I finally bought the new Macbook. If it had not been for owing the webtv/msntv 2 the transition would not have been so easy. There are things that I will continue to use the msntv2 for but the Macbook will be my main unit, They both are now connected to dsl.
Digital camera Review: I love it Summary: 5 Stars
I think this product is great. I started out with the first msn reciever, and it was great for beginner's who don't know much about computers. I had it for about 6 years nd it served me well, but I was ready for an upgrade, so I went out and bought the new and improved msn2, it is quiet different from the first one, but it is worth every penny, it is much faster, and has allot of great, and different things to do on it. I still have my old one, if this one doesn't work out for me, but I really think it will.
Digital camera Review: I would definately do it again! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had my MSNTV-2 since October 2004. I had a MSNTV-2100 unit for two years prior. MSNTV-2 is clearly a vast improvement, especially with the Broadband option features. The MSNTV-2 Support Staff has been consistantly helpful when problems or issues arrise. Granted there have been moments of aggrivation but overall, far more positives than negatives. I feel we are fortunate to have Microsoft Corp. involvement in this niche market. I believe that exciting new developments are coming. I am looking forward to MSNTV-3 and more!
