Digital camera reviews of RCA RC920 Wireless Phone Jack ExtensionDigital camera Review: Don't bother for anything but standard voice connection Summary: 2 Stars
These RCA wireless connectors are okay for basic phone conversation over short distances. Don't bother trying to use them for data such as with TiVo or a computer. They simply won't work. They use a fairly old technology and even basic phone conversation can result in interference from other devices in the house.
Digital camera Review: Good if you are only using for phones, not modems Summary: 3 Stars
We moved into a condo unit that had only one phone jack for the whole 2 bedroom unit (it was a luxury renovation of an old building). I didn't want to spend on installing extra jacks and with a toddler in the house I didn't want to string wires all over the floor to run to a 3-way Y-jack, so this system looked like a godsend. It works pretty well with the 3 phones in our house. One older phone which also happens to be the furthest away from the "base unit" near the main phone jack sometimes comes out staticky and occasionally disconnects calls, but not enough for me to complain, even though it shouldn't do this at all. The other phones work fine. But using the modem is the problem. I normally get about 50K or so with a standard 56K modem, as they warn on the package, plugged directly into this I only get 14.4K or so, not really enough to surf the web. I did a trick where I put a 2-way Y-jack into the lone phone jack in my condo, in one jack goes the wireless jack system, in the other goes a phone wire that goes right to my modem (so already I'm giving in and carefully stringing a wire on the floor, the reason I bought this is NOT to do that). But instead of completely distinguishing the 2, this still causes minor interference. I still get a slight drop in speed (usually 33-40K), but sometimes it will disconnect me from the Web or not connect me at all (I get the infamous "Error 650" that you usually get when the modem itself is starting to die). The only fix I've had is to temporarily unplug the Wireless Phone Jack from the Y-jack in my wall when I want to surf the Web (which I then get at normal dialup speed). The only problem with this is that the way I have things setup, if I forget to plug everything back in when I'm done surfing the Web, incoming calls when I'm out will not go to the answering machine. So I think it is a great product if you are only using it to add phone jacks without the drilling and expense for the use of additional phones, but not for use with a modem.
Digital camera Review: It works very well but does have some drawbacks Summary: 3 Stars
I have used two RCA Wireless Phone jacks for about two years now without much in the way of problems. They are portable and literally just need to be plugged in. One drawback is that you cannot pick up two phones that are connected to two individual jacks at the same time (3 way conversation). One of the jacks grabs the dial tone and the other will give a nasty buzz. You may also need to periodically reset both extension units by lifting the receiver of the phone attached to the base unit if you do not hear a dial tone from the extension units. You can however lift the phone receiver attached to the base unit and one of the phone receivers attached to the extension unit simultaneously for 3-way conversations. If you plan to use the wireless jack for a phone or fax machine do not plug this device into a wall socket that is too near electrical lines or devices. You will receive a lot of static interference and the performance of the phone jack will degrade over time. Apart from these minor drawbacks the units are very cost effective, very portable, and function well over a long period of time. If you can handle a slow internet connection then this will work fine for the internet as well.
Digital camera Review: It works, but pick your use carefully Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using a set of these for over a year, and they are a godsend but not perfect. The good news; I use it to connect my Tivo (Tivo needs to dial in every night to update its program data) and it was the perfect solution for a tough spot, since there's no phone jack anywhere near my television. I have also used it to surf the web with a dial-up connection, with no real problems. Its fine, even through an extension cord! The bad news; I've tried to use for a phone, and that rally didn't cut it. It worked, but its a bad connection. I couldn't tolerate it. So I dispute the earlier comment that it can't be used for data. For me, its only use is for data, not voice! For certain situations, its ideal.
Digital camera Review: Misleading Summary: 1 Stars
This item is promoted by Amazon along with the RC 930 system. Turns out, after reading some very small fine print on the package that they are completely incompatible with each other. I wasted my money and could not return because the package was opened. Buyer beware!
