Digital camera reviews of RCA RP5500i Universal iPod Dock AM/FM Clock RadioDigital camera Review: Near perfection for a little clock radio. Summary: 4 StarsWhat to do when you want a basic clock radio with a small footprint, an accommodation for your Ipod, and you are not looking for big sound and a big price? Consider the RCA RP5500i. I've had mine for over a year and I'm still glad I bought it. I'm even considering buying a second one for the guest room. I've not had any of the problems indicated by others, however.
The sound is as good as any clock radio - not a Tivoli mind you, but one of your basic clock radios.
Its cleverness with the Ipod was irresistible to me. I love the way the drawer slides out to accept the IPod - along with its bright blue light (which you can turn off). I also like the way the time readout shifts across the face of the clock to make room for the Ipod. You see, the Ipod, once loaded onto the clock, invades part of the front of the clock so the designers allowed for the time readout to shift left once loaded. The best part of this feature is that when you remove the Ipod, you slide the drawer back in so, unlike other units, there is no "dead space" or unsightly vacancy.
If you like large type-size readouts, this one is readable from about a 20 foot distance. And the time sets automatically although it seems to be off by a minute. At first I was annoyed about this. Now I just think of it as quirky.
I also like that I can play the Ipod to go to sleep then wake up with the ringer. And it has a great nap feature that lets you set the clock with a push of a button for naps of various times. When the time is up, it wakes you as it would in alarm mode - but you don't have to trouble yourself with setting a specific time. Of course, you might think "who has time for naps in this day and age?!" and you'd be right - but with a setting like this it actually gives you the idea to take a bit of a break from work and close your eyes for 15 minutes. Refreshing.
But the best part is that it has a much smaller footprint than other Ipod-accommodating units I looked at.
I do wish it had some of the features others mentioned, but I'm not greedy. This is a great little unit.
