Digital camera Review: Important technical information and major problems
Summary: 1 Stars

Here is important information not currently shown in Amazon.com techical information for this product: According to the box, this clock radio is made for iPod nano (1st generation), iPod (4th generation), iPod mini (1st & 2nd generation, iPod with video (5th generation), iPod photo (4th generation). While the product is advertised as an iPod docking station, my iPod nano (4th generation) gives the error message "Recharging not supported with this device." In addition, using the iPod with the alarm clock resulted in a corrupted iPod.

New information: I couldn't use this product with my ipod, but I was using it as a reasonably good clock radio. Then the bottom half of all digits went black after about 6 months of use. I stuck it out for a couple of months by not changing any of the previous settings. But I can no longer see what radio station I am on or what time it is.

Today, I am on Amazon.com looking for a new clock radio.

Digital camera Review: Near perfection for a little clock radio.
Summary: 4 Stars

What to do when you want a basic clock radio with a small footprint, an accommodation for your Ipod, and you are not looking for big sound and a big price? Consider the RCA RP5500i. I've had mine for over a year and I'm still glad I bought it. I'm even considering buying a second one for the guest room. I've not had any of the problems indicated by others, however.

The sound is as good as any clock radio - not a Tivoli mind you, but one of your basic clock radios.
Its cleverness with the Ipod was irresistible to me. I love the way the drawer slides out to accept the IPod - along with its bright blue light (which you can turn off). I also like the way the time readout shifts across the face of the clock to make room for the Ipod. You see, the Ipod, once loaded onto the clock, invades part of the front of the clock so the designers allowed for the time readout to shift left once loaded. The best part of this feature is that when you remove the Ipod, you slide the drawer back in so, unlike other units, there is no "dead space" or unsightly vacancy.

If you like large type-size readouts, this one is readable from about a 20 foot distance. And the time sets automatically although it seems to be off by a minute. At first I was annoyed about this. Now I just think of it as quirky.

I also like that I can play the Ipod to go to sleep then wake up with the ringer. And it has a great nap feature that lets you set the clock with a push of a button for naps of various times. When the time is up, it wakes you as it would in alarm mode - but you don't have to trouble yourself with setting a specific time. Of course, you might think "who has time for naps in this day and age?!" and you'd be right - but with a setting like this it actually gives you the idea to take a bit of a break from work and close your eyes for 15 minutes. Refreshing.

But the best part is that it has a much smaller footprint than other Ipod-accommodating units I looked at.
I do wish it had some of the features others mentioned, but I'm not greedy. This is a great little unit.

Digital camera Review: Not if you're a radio listener
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a sleek clock radio with a very handy way of plugging in your Ipod. You receive a whole set of Ipod base adapters so that you can use a variety of models. Having said that, be advised that this unit is not for those who will want to listen to radio very much. At first glance, this appears to be a digitally-tuned radio. And I think it might really be. The radio frequency number appears on the LED read-out as you tune. The huge problem is that there are no pre-sets. Each time you want to change stations, you must turn an incredibly sensitive thumb wheel. You must tune up and down each frequency very carefully. If you want an AM station at 1070, you must be very precise or you will land on 1060 or 1080. The same goes for FM. This radio is only for those who listen to only one station most of the time. With the other nice features, and the price, it is hard to understand why the engineers did not add pre-sets for the radio frequencies.

Digital camera Review: Plagued by Display Design Defect
Summary: 1 Stars

There is a great deal to like about this clock radio, but I am convinced there is a circuit design problem that cannot be ignored. I have owned two of them, primarily attracted to the usb port feature that will play songs in mp3 directly from a usb flash drive. But in each radio the Display has failed. In one of the radios the display stopped working altogether, and in the other half of all the digits went dead. One of them was under warranty, and while RCA/Thompson replaced it with a new one. Unfortunately, it later failed also. That makes 3 out of the 3 for me.

Curiously, I was recently at my local Fry's and the they had a clearance corner of odds and ends and there was a 5500i in the pile for $5. I asked the salesman why so cheap and he replied that the display had failed. Given that I have seen at least one other post here from someone with the same problem, it sure suggests that something is wrong with this model. It's a bummer because other than not having a headphone jack, this is a way cool clock radio.

When I plugged in the clock radio only one half of the LCD display was readable. It would not properly display the time. I sent it back
