Digital camera reviews of RCA RP7887 AM/FM Super Portable Radio

Digital camera Review: Aaaaargh!
Summary: 1 Stars

Be sure to check the other 1-star reviews. I just put this radio in the trash - I didn't want to donate or give it away because I don't want anyone else to suffer with this product. I don't know all the tech terms -- what happens: I'm happily listening to a station and suddenly it's lost. I VERY GENTLY move the tuner to get the station back, but it's gone. Again and again I've spent several minutes trying to get a station back until I give up and turn the darn thing off. The last time that happened, I didn't bother to turn it off - I just unplugged and trashed it, and sat down to write this review - and shop for a new radio. Until the new radio arrives, I'll go back to my (I guess they don't make them like the used to) 15 year old radio.

Digital camera Review: Also a fan
Summary: 4 Stars

I live near Nashville and can listen to Chicago radio with zero interference, very nearly. I have nothing to add to what others have said: good design; batteries last forever; good sound...I'd have given this the full five stars had it a digital tuner, but I'm not sure I want to buy a radio that requires a PhD in order to operate it like a Sony shortwave I own.

Digital camera Review: An Absolute Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

This is called a Super Radio for only one reason. I have the RCA version III, and some say the GE version III (discontinued, sold to RCA) is better. Many radio shops say it's exactly the same. It's Chinese made like everything else, but WOW. If you are a real DX'er, have fun, WOW. If you just want a no thrills table radio, WOW. $I paid $42. It out performs my $250 AM/FM digital. Go figure. What a bargain. I think this RCA version is going to be discontinued too, so look around. I have too many radios. My wife wants me to get rid of the ones I don't use. This is a keeper.

Digital camera Review: As Good As They Say It Is
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this mainly to listen to AM radio broadcasts. For that it is great, and it doesn't even cost a lot.

Two advantages:
Great AM reception (the FM is good also, but the AM is the main thing here).
Nice sound (with the larger speaker, you get decent bass).
The battery-power option is nice as well.

The power cord is both an advantage and a disadvantage.... The good part is that it is permanently attached, so there's no separate AC power adapter to lose.... The bad part is that the built-in AC power supply feeds some wall current noise into the radio; with a separate power supply there's things you can do to help prevent that.

One disadvantage is that the AM antenna is not rotatable separate of the radio--so if you are listening to a weak signal, you may have to turn the radio to an undesirable direction for best reception.

If you like AM listening, there's really only two portable radios with good built-in AM antennas out there: this one and the Sangean. The RCA is an analog tuner, and the Sangean is digital. I don't have the Sangean so I cannot make that comparison, but I do know that this RCA will pick up lots of stations better that lesser AM radios I have will.

-end-

Digital camera Review: Average - But cheap...
Summary: 3 Stars

It is loud, and gets decent AM, but the tuning on FM is sketchy as best, and does no better job pulling distant stations than my cheapo Sony at work. Also, would it kill them to put in a little LCD signal strength light? My Tivoli is light-years better, but at least 80 bucks more.
