Digital camera reviews of RCA RP7887 AM/FM Super Portable Radio

Digital camera Review: Bad radio right out of the box
Summary: 1 Stars

This radio was broken right out of the box, and i've been given a series on non working 800 numbers to call in pursuit of warranty service.

Audiovox, GE, and RCA claim they don't support this item.

Don't buy!

Digital camera Review: Best Long Distance AM Reception for the Money
Summary: 5 Stars

I just got my radio, and it works perfectly out of the box. I also own the GE version that I bought over 13 years ago, and this RCA version seems to be nearly identical. The old one still works, but I wanted to get a new one to have in case my trusty old GE dies. As others have written, the tuning dial is not very accurate, but on this one anyway, it seems like whoever aligned it did the best they could; it is pretty accurate in the middle, but it is off at the ends of the dial, so I don't think that adjusting the pointer would help. Not a big deal really, considering the excellent reception on AM and FM, the good tone, ability to connect an antenna, outstanding battery life, etc, but especially at the low price! I did not notice any of the issues others have noted besides the dial accuracy, so maybe they improved quality control, or I got lucky with this one.
Someone wrote that this radio might be discontinued, but it is still listed on their website [...] Interestingly, if you click on 'contact us' on the RCA website, you end up at audiovox.com; it seems that Audiovox bought the RCA and GE consumer electronics business from Thomson in 2008.

Digital camera Review: Best There Is
Summary: 5 Stars

The Superradio is known worldwide as the best portable radio there is. It is manufactured by Thomson SA (aka Thomson Multimedia), a French company which is a direct decendant of the original General Electric and Edison companies. Thomson owns the RCA name, which it bought from GE. The radios are manufactured under both the RCA and Thomson labels, and were previously sold under the GE label as well.

For signal grabbing ability on AM and FM you can't do better. They have antenna inputs if you need -- both AM and FM (a simple FM dipole antenna works GREAT). The weather channels are just a nice bonus.

Digital camera Review: Best radio ever 5 Stars

I got this radio after many hours of research and a friends advice,as he had one.great reception on both am and fm . It has the best sound of any portable I have ever heard.I went to local Circuit City and they did not have a radio that would receive a FM station I was trying to get. This one picks up signal strongly. I ordered from amazon.com and received in 2 days.Strongly recommend if you are looking for a great am-fm portable.

Digital camera Review: Best sound; Indifferent quality; bad ergonomics
Summary: 4 Stars

As a professional broadcaster for many years, I LIKE radios a lot. I've lived with my Superadio for about 10 years.

THE BAD: the ergonomics of the unit, the "human engineering", is pretty awful. The rotating pots for volume and tone are often sticky and gritty right out of the box. The plastic toggles for band, AFC, narrow/wide AM, are as cheap and cheesy as can be made and still function most of the time. The big tuner knob is pretty good, though. I don't get much drift once I set a station. The calibration of the dial is comically inaccurate, however, so the frequency markings are pretty much just a rough guide.
The form factor is another annoyance. Center of gravity is high so the unit tips over easily, and sometimes even adjusting the volume is a two-handed operation -- one to hold the unit and the other to twist the gritty little knob.
Overall build quality is not very high, and many purchased units are defective. Anyone who complains that they can't get decent reception or the sound is bad on their Superadios have defective units. That's the only possible explanation.

THE GOOD: The sound is absolutely glorious. Nothing can touch it in its class, and for twice the money. In addition to the large speaker the unit boasts a small tweeter. Voice or music, it offers the best sound you can get in a portable radio.
Reception is likewise incredibly impressive. Listening to AM at night is a real trip, literally. This is one of the reasons that there is no digital tuning on this model. A dial setup will pull in stations much better than a typical digital tuner will. "Digital" is not always best.
Battery life seems infinite.

BOTTOM LINE: This is the radio for people, and only for those people, who want the best available sound from a table/portable radio. Dontcha all be lookin' for clocks and alarms and doodads on this sweet thing, now. It's ugly, downright fugly, with iffy build and questionable design. But once tuned in, the glory of the sonics will be a reminder of a little money very well spent indeed.
