Digital camera reviews of RCA RP7887 AM/FM Super Portable RadioDigital camera Review: Garbage Summary: 1 Stars
We've had a previous version of this radio that lasted 25 years and always had excellent reception and good sound quality. So bought same model as a replacement or so I thought. Initially, reception was on par with other cheap radios. Certainly no better. After three months the radio stopped receiving any stations. Customer service was very poor (I would have to guess this is intentional). Ended up just buying a different radio and eating the cost of this one. This is now just a cheap radio charging a price to unsuspecting customers who think they are buying a quality radio based on the name.
Digital camera Review: Good Radio Summary: 5 Stars
This radio is the real deal. From Western NC, I can receive broadcasts clearly from across the eastern seaboard at night. Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago all come in loud and clear.
If you are looking for top notch performance in an affordable package, this is the radio for you. The dial does have a tendency to drift, but for the price, the AM tuning is unbeatable.
FM tuning is also good, but if you are looking for the best AM reception, look no further.
Update: The tuner drift is becoming increasingly frustrating. It may be worth it to go for a digitally tuned AM (CSW or PR-D5)
Digital camera Review: Good Radio Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good radio. It's designed especially for maximum am/fm reception, and it delivers just that. I use it mainly to listen to a 700 watt daytime AM station located about 70 miles away. Pulls it right in. Use it with a select-a-tenna for really awesome AM performance! FM performance is also good. The tuning dial is accurate on mine. The sound quality is great. The built-in AC power supply is a nice touch that isn't usually found on radios these days. Build quality seems to be good, especially for being made in China. It is a nice "beefy" radio.
The normal/wide switch doesn't seem to work like I'd expect, it seems to have "wider" bandwidth on the normal setting, so maybe mine is wired wrong, or that's just part of this radio's unique personality. Different settings sound better on different stations. Power switch is scratchy, but does work fine. I would give this radio 5 stars instead of 4, if it weren't for these issues.
Digital camera Review: Good audio Summary: 4 Stars
The RCA Super Portable is easy to tune and simple to operate. The audio is very good with good frequency response. Loaded with batteries, it is a bit heavy for a "portable."
Digital camera Review: Good old-school radio! Summary: 4 Stars
I probably could have gotten something suitable for less, but this unit sounds great and has that old-school look i wanted. It reminds me of the portables we had growing up. The build quality is satisfactory, but not like a Sony. It's pretty no frills, but I am satisfied with it, and am betting it will last for decades with moderate care.
Update: I wish the FM tuner was better, it's often hard to get stations fully tuned in.
