These adapters work with new Apple computers that have combination optical/Analog jacks, (My new Mac Pro for example) Powermacs and MacPro towers have seperate analog and toslink, but IIRC everything else in the Apple lineup uses combo minijacks.
Certain other equipment uses the same optical/analog minijacks, like MiniDisc players

I'm going to keep this simple. With one of these adapters, a toslink cable and a Optical cable switchbox (like 15.00, if that) I can hook up my MacBook to surround sound with ease. Every laptop is different although the late model Mac's have a built in mini-optical out in the headphone jacks so it is literally plug and play. Pair this with the Mini-DVI to HDMI cable and you can hook up your laptop to your television and still have full surround sound. I bought this to use with the optical output on my new laptop, but it broke because of all the moving around that comes naturally with a laptop. The base of the tip broke, so now the whole tip wiggles, but surprisingly it still works fine. I guess the optical fiber inside of the tip is flexible, while the black plastic casing around it is not.Digital camera Review: It works

Quality is good and the sound is well preserved! My only complain is that is really hard to remove the adapter from the cable; other than that it is a really good product for the value, I mean it is just an adapter so it does the job.
