Digital camera reviews of Roku HD-XR PlayerDigital camera Review: After 2 hours with customer service am returning it Summary: 1 Stars
I placed the order on October 31. The unit arrived on November 14. Shipping to Maryland took two weeks!
I have a LinkSys WRT150N (B/G/N) wireless router that works great with various wireless laptops and a wireless xbox. The Roku XR would not connect.
The Roku help desk technician walked me through numerous adjustments to my router in an attempt to work around Roku problems. In total we spent nearly two hours and finally concluded that the Roku XR would only work if my router's network mode was set to "B-G Mixed" rather than "Mixed." The absurdity of this is that the Roku XR is specifically designed to take advantage of extended range Wireless-N, and for this feature costs more than the Roku HD model. The technician was very patient and professional, yet she did not seem to understand my dismay with the idea that I should down-grade my wireless network mode to exclude a feature that the Roku XR is specifically designed to support!
After taking so much time searching for a work-around for the Roku XR, I would expect Roku customer support to offer to (quickly!) replace the unit with the HD model and refund the difference. All I got is a return authorization number and an address to send it to at my expense.
Digital camera Review: Almost There! Summary: 4 Stars
Small size is great if you don't have much space. The material is not top quality, looks a little cheap. Functionality is there, I would have expected it to be slower. The price I thought was great until Appletv came up with their new version at same price. I think now that Roku should be around $50 if they want to compete with Apple.
Digital camera Review: Almost as good as it seems Summary: 4 Stars
This product seemed to be just what we were looking and waiting for: instant movies, no late fees, no trips to the video store and no unwatched DVDs sitting around the house. It almost meets my expectations, and my complaints are really with a more complicated set-up than I'd anticipated and non-existent customer support. Now that we have it working (through many, many trials and errors), it's a dream.
One thing we discovered early in set-up is that the wireless connection in our home couldn't handle the Roku. We use wireless throughout the house for our computers, but this device must have demanded too much. Once we plugged the device into our internet connection with an Ethernet cord, problems started to resolve. (Now I just need to run the connection to my TV through the ceiling or some way to clean up the family room floor.)
Also, we needed to "unlink" the Roku from the Roku account that the device had me create during normal set-up. I don't know why that worked, but once I did that we were finally able to access our Netflix account. Now I have a long queue for instant viewing and my daughter (coincidentally sick this weekend and wanting nothing but Scooby Doo movies) watches with a click and a 15-second wait while each movie downloads. This is really better than DVDs -- no previews, lengthy FBI / Interpol warnings -- even without the need to either purchase or rent and return the DVD.
Throughout our complicated, problem-ridden set-up I tried to contact Roku. Both my husband and I sent support inquiries. Over 72 hours later, I've still heard nothing in response except for a confirming email that someone would get in touch within 24-48 hours. But, with some restarts and trials of different configurations, we finally do have it running. If you are reasonable tech-savvy and can trouble-shoot on your own, this is a great machine. Just don't expect any help from a live person at Roku.
Digital camera Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
I was amazed at the quality of the movies being streamed from Netflix. Setup was very simple. I hooked it up to my wireless and it picked it right up. I am very happy with the Roku. Also the Pandora Radio was pretty cool. Turned it on and cleaned the house while listening to it.
Digital camera Review: Amazing little box! Summary: 5 Stars
This little black box is an amazing thing. It is a great price, sets up simply and works perfectly. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to use it wirelessly, despite it's claims. I didn't want to have constant skipping and reloading while I was watching something. I have used this every day for about a month now and it has NEVER skipped. My router is not nearby either-it's upstairs. The box is so small that I can just stick it behind the tv, on top of my tv's wall mount; I don't even have to wire the cord through my walls. The remote works fine with the box hidden out of sight. I purchased the MLB package for my husband and he is thrilled. My kids love the option of being able to select a Netflix movie instantly instead of waiting for it to come in the mail. It's so nice to see a well-priced product that does what it says!
