Digital camera reviews of Samsung BD-P2500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Digital camera Review: Crapshoot...
Summary: 1 Stars

I received my player this evening. Plugged my Ethernet cable in, and tried three times to download the newest firmware. Wouldn't take. Downloaded the software to a thumb drive, although the first attempt did not take. Reformatted the thumb drive, even though it already had been, re-downloaded the firmware, plugged it in, and it worked. The system went through all of the steps the instructions told me it would. Then once the player finally turned off, I turned it back on again, however, the front panel was stuck on "load" and became completely inoperable. All trouble shooting steps failed. I just got off the phone with Amazon and have my return/refund processing as I write this. I was really looking forward to using this player too, since my Samsung 40 inch LCD 1080p and Blu-Ray BD-P1500 both work flawlessly.

Digital camera Review: Dead after 5 months with a 3 month warranty
Summary: 1 Stars

The Samsung worked well for the first few months - picture quality and sound were excellent. I bought it in February 2009 and by July I started having trouble playing blu ray discs. The picture would freeze about 20 minutes into the disc. Sometimes I could fast forward to continue the movie, but sometimes not. Samsung tech support suggested I reset the player by pressing and holding the fast forward button. This fixed the problem for about a week. Then the problem came back, both on blu ray and DVD. I continued to reset the player, and each time I did it fixed the problem for a shorter period of time. It is a pain to reset the player because you have to also reset your Netflix passcode each time. Now, in September 2009, it won't play any blu ray or DVD media. I imagine the lasers are dead. This is a shoddy blu ray player with a short warranty - don't buy it! On the plus side, it is a good Netflix device. If you are only looking for a Netflix streaming device, you can buy a used Samsung with a dead laser for cheap (there are plenty out there like mine). Then get a reliable blu ray player like a Pioneer for your discs.

Digital camera Review: Dead on Arrival
Summary: 1 Stars

This review has two parts and therefore, has two different ratings. This item was ordered on a Thursday for next day delivery. I received the player on a Friday and set it up and the firmware upgraded with no problems. However, I soon realized that when the disc tray was ejected and reinserted, there was a spinning up of the disc but it would never read from ANY disc. I checked out the Netflix option, which is the PRIMARY reason for purchasing this unit and I was completely satisfied with the quality, the time it takes to stream, and the ease of use. My 3 kids have no problem loading up the queue with their content.

I reported the issue to Amazon and a replacement, functioning unit arrived on Monday. While the original unit was defective, I have been completely satisfaction with the new unit. I understand that the queuing for Blu Ray takes longer than regular DVDs but in my limit exposure, it is relatively quick. So for this unit, 1 star, for the second one, 5 stars. Worth the money, and I would purchase it again.

Digital camera Review: Defective

Looks may be deceiving! Put a dvd in it froze within the first 2 mins and then I wasn't able to open the player up. Took me a full day to wait for it to open.

Digital camera Review: Definitely some rough edges
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this unit for use with a Samsung HL-61A750 television, and for most Blu Ray discs, it produces stunning results. It even does a very good job of upscaling DVD material. However, there are some very real quirks that keep me from recommending this unit to others:

Disc load times are sometimes painfully slow, especially if you're used to a DVD player, or even a PS3. (Samsung has addressed this in their latest generation of Blu Ray players.)

If you have the unit set for 24fps, Netflix streaming video has numerous glitches, including the screen going black when you try to fast forward or rewind a streaming video. (Setting the unit at the standard 60fps seems to resolve the issue.)

Some discs have glitches on playback that can't be resolved, even by rolling back the firmware to the prior version (trust me, I've tried.) For example, I was trying to play my copy of The Matrix on DVD and was getting errors with the Dolby Digital soundtrack, so I bought a copy of the 10th anniversary edition on Blu Ray. Unfortunately, this just made things worse: due to incompatibilities between the player and the disc, you can't turn off the commentary, and Dolby TrueHD is only available in Bistream (audiophile) mode. Of course, the audio for the commentary disappears when you're using this mode. Arrgh.

If I had it do all over again, I'd read reviews on a site such as avsforum.com where actual users with hands-on experience can tell you about the pros and cons of the various units. For now, I'm on the fence as to whether I'm going to sell this unit on eBay or wait for further firmware updates.
